Spring In the Rockies
Selected Haiku
(C)2002 Rosemary J. Gwaltney
Springing between clouds
the quick bold flicker of sun
kisses me breathless
Spring in strong rhythm
copious rain’s rousing beat
lively tin roof jazz
Weak sun melts the snow
from the faded gray earth peers
one purple crocus
Pensive virgin field
awakes in sun’s warm embrace
flushes timid green
Fresh scent of rich earth
hands urge new life to flourish
greenhouse birthing room
Old friends return
enjoy greening meadows
hungry deer munch
Stream's fluid music
leaps down field over smooth stones
plays ice lullabies
Surging purple swells
unfurl across west peak’s ridge
swift downpour clamors
Pond ice freed from shore
dances brisk wind’s free form lilt
glints in spring’s cold sun
Purple sky highlights
forest’s sharp black silhouette
evening’s night light dims
Steady plow turns soil
wide acres of fresh black earth
hunger for new life
Chain saw buzzes
dead larch crashes by creek
firewood to haul
