House Targaryen The Old Dynasty And Traditional Lords Of Dragonstone Fire And Blood
The Targaryens are the blood of the dragon, descended from the high lords of the ancient Freehold of Valyria, their heritage proclaimed in a striking (some say inhuman) beauth, with lilac or indigo or violet eyes and hair of silver-gold or platinum white.
Aegon the Dragon's ancestors escaped the Doom of Valyria and the chaos and slaughter that followed to settle on Dragonstone, a rocky island in the Narrow Sea. It was from there that Aegon and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys, with their dragons, Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes, sailed to conquer the Seven Kingdoms. The conquered six, all except Dorne, and Aegon made his seat at King's Landing, where he first landed on the mainland of Westeros. There he had the swords of his enemies melted into an Iron Throne, an uncomfortable monstrosity, saying that "A king should not sit easy."
To preserve the blood royal and keep it pure, House Targaryen has often followed the Valyrian custom of wedding brother to sister, even though the Seven, which they worshipped, are said to abhor incest. Aegon himself took both his sisters to wife, and fathered sons on each. The skulls of the dead Targaryen dragons, nineteen in all before they died out, were hung around the Royal throne room. The Targaryen sigil is a three-headed dragon, red on black, the three heads representing Aegon and his sisters. The Targaryen words are Fire and Blood.
Aerys II Targaryen, known as the Mad King, was an evil and sadistic tyrant. The deaths of Lord Rickard Stark and Brandon Stark were by his order. His demand for the heads of Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark proved to be his, and his House's undoing. His heir was killed at the Trident in the resulting war and when he opened the gates of King's Landing to the Lannisters, Ser Jaime Lannister of his own Kingsguard slit his throat. His son's wife and children were killed and his last two children sent into exile. Thus perished the line of the Dragon Kings.
