The band started out as a jam session at a party about 4 years ago.
A mutual friend introduced me to delhamsta and we decided to pull out the ol' bass
and axe at one of his parties. We weren't very social but we did rock
out to a lot of tunes. Well, we decided to start playing together regularly.
Delhamsta voiced his opinion that we should get this good guitar player he knew
named patters. All three of us began playing together for a couple months before
we decided that we needed a full band (i.e. drummer/singer). At this point I suggested
we be different and add a horn player who was a friend of mine (thus entered tori kun).
After several failed attempts at finding a singer and drummer, we finally settled on mc
disagree and merlin. Thus began the infamous barn jams. We actually praciticed in a barn
in the middle of nowhere. In fact, the first name of our band came out of me and torikun's travels
to the country. "Soil," torikun remarked about the landscape as we drove to the barn. Torikun thought
it would make a cool band name and the rest of the newly formed band agreed. About two weeks before our
first show (a "battle of the bands" at a coffee shop), we decided to add two more horns; depu-d and
tweak. By this time delhamsta was pulling a double shift, playing sax for some songs and guitar for others.
Our first show went well, but in the end we lost out to a pair of jugs. We scheduled another show at the coffee
shop and began to write more tunes. At this point, we began practicing less at the barn and more at andy's garage
o' porn. Our first show as the band soil was a disaster and most people stood gaping in horror at our "ecclectic" sound.
We immediately decided to scrap most of the old songs (professor x is the only one that made it through the purge).
We also started writing new tunes. One such tune was 'the sandwich mafia' which inspired the new name for the band.
Thus began the illustrious career of the band known as the sandwich mafia.
We have had many crazy adventures since the beginning and will probably have many more before it is all said and done.
