SUMMER SOLSTICE: A public celebration of the summer solstice is held each June on the Central Mountain of the Chumash nation. This peak was originally called Iwihinmu, which means a place of mystery. You can find it on your map under the name Pine Mountain, a short distance west from Frazier Park and Fort Tejon. The annual prayer vigil on Mount Pinos (Iwihinmu), is held on the summer solstice (June 21). In 1999 the 21st fell
on a Monday, and the Chumash celebrated with prayer, dancing and the gathering of people on June
19th and 20th, which was the previous Saturday and Sunday. There is over night camping, for more information contact

FALL POWWOW: SANTA YNEZ RESERVATION An Annual Fall powwow date Oct. 19 & 20 at Live Oak campground. For further call Virginia or Dorothy at 805-688-7997. Thanks, Tribal Admin.
SUMMER POWWOW: TEHACHAPI This June powwow is attended by some Bakersfield Chumash and other Tejon reservation Indians. June. 805-822-6613.
CALIFORNIA INDIAN COUNCIL POWWOW: The annual "Everything is Sacred" Intertribal Pow Wow takes place in Borchard Park, Newbury Park, California. In the year 2000 it will be held . September 16th & 17th. This gathering is attended by many individuals within the Chumash community, including members of the Santa Ynez Reservation. There is no charge for admission or parking.
