The year was 1977 when the 1st National Rowing Championships were rowed in Calcutta on the Rabindra Sarovar Lake. It was a momentous event in the history of rowing in the country. It took rowing as a sport to the next level - from the Club to the National. The formation of the National Federation further prompted the spread of the sport to many more States, thereby taking rowing to almost every corner of the country.
