The Macleod's

What's in a name? They say your name is your only legacy. To leave a good name is the greatest gift of all. I am a Macleod. My parents have taught me to take pride in my heritage. I have visited Scotland and the Isle of Skye, where Dunvegan Castle is located. The head of the clan lives there. I am convinced that Scotland is the the most beautiful place on earth. Whether I'm refering to my family in America or the family of people who have proudly beared the name "Macleod" I am awestruck by the legacy that has been left to me.

My Family

These are my folks. My mom, dad, and brother make the most incredible family anyone could ask for. My little brother, who is not so little any more towers over my 5'5" frame! Somewhere between diapers and now, he grew into a handsome young man! Watch out ladies... a heartbreaker is on the loose! My parents are awesome, too!

Dunvegan Castle

I am member of the Macleod Clan. The Macleod family castle, called Dunvegan, is shown here. The fascinating origins of the clan can be traced to Leod, who was born about 1200, the son of Olave the Black, King of Man and the Isles. Leod married the daughter and heiress of MacRaild about the year 1220. Through his son, Tormod, came the MacLeods of Harris, Dunvegan and Glenelg, and through his second son, Torquil, came the MacLeods of Lewis. Throughout the centuries MacLeods have been known for their devotion to their chief, the tenacity with which they have maintained the ancient Dunvegan castle, their appreciation of music and Gaelic lore, their outstanding record in the professions, and their loyalty to one another. Originally a rock fortress founded about eight and a half centuries ago, Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye in Invernesshire, Scotland, has grown and changed over the years until today it is a beautiful and historic castle - the oldest continuously inhabited stronghold in the British Isles, the home of the Chief and the symbolic clan home to MacLeods around the world. John MacLeod of MacLeod lives there now. Isn't it pretty?

The Macleod Crest is shown here. Actually there are two, due to branching way back when. My lineage traces to MacLeod of MacLeod. Clansmen are identified through the MacLeod crests, worn as badges or brooches, and by which their loyalty is identified. The crest of MacLeod of MacLeod bears the motto 'HOLD FAST', while that of MacLeod of Lewis is 'I SHINE, NOT BURN'. The crests do not show a separation of clanship, but rather a togetherness, and a shared loyalty to one another. It's kind of ironic that the motto is "Hold Fast" since everyone who knows me accuses me of being stubborn. Can't blame me, huh? It's in my blood!
