A woman of medium build and height, wearing a buff trench coat which has seen better days. She wears fairly nice but simple "business casual" clothing, such as blouses and trousers, along with sensible shoes, of course. She's often lugging around her laptop bag, evidence kit, or messenger bag full of other useful supplies. She has pale skin and a round face, with inquisitive green eyes. She normally wears her straight brown hair tied loosely back, with the shorter strands falling into her face.

Wendy King's life was touched by the unusual--when a small child, she saw shop window dummies break out of their places; when a little older and playing near a London junkyard, she swore she saw a strange silver man come out of the sewer--and later, again, years later, attending a jazz festival. She heard about cat-people in Perivale. And so on.

 

Curious, she began to do research, and had discovered, vague though things appeared, there was a strange pattern of occurences and "monster" attacks, especially in the London area, dating at least back to 1963. As she got older, she trained to become a private detective, specializing in solving cases the police had left open, especially with strange deaths or disappearances. At one point, she was in touch with a fellow named Clive, who blamed Britain's "alien" troubles on a fellow named "the Doctor." Clive was killed when the shop window dummies attacked again--Wendy knew she hadn't imagined it, all those years ago.

 

Later, when trying to dig up information on the spaceship that crashed into Big Ben, Wendy attracted the attention of Torchwood. At first she thought she was in trouble--but the heads of Torchwood told her what she had been investigating was indeed real, and they liked her work. She found them a little too overzealously, almost brainwashed, patriotic, but they were offering her an opportunity she could never get elsewhere, so she took their job offer.

 

When the "ghosts" appeared, Wendy started asking too many questions about Torchwood's motives and methods investigating the ghosts, and she was sent to investigate some missing sheep in the north. Though they were trying to get rid of her (temporarily), the move saved her life. The problem was, the old fellow in Torchwood North had no interest in her or her work, and she returned to London to find Torchwood Tower devastated. Her employment with Torchwood had resulted in much of her old life being stricken from the records--suddenly, she was forgotten by the Institute and the mundane world alike.
