IN August and September 2011 I went to Cairns with my Dad (pictured, in the top right-hand side photo) to escape the southern winter and also see some birds, which are his big passion. We drove through the verdant farmland north of Cairns, through the canefields and lush country, towards the nearby hills. I might not have known it at the time, but this was to be the first of many trips across the range, as it dwindled slowly towards the cape. rrigate an agricultural Eden. Up past Kuranda, Mareeba, Mt Molloy, Mt Carbine, Desailly, and finally to a prick on the map called Lakeland. Where we stopped for lunch. We did a spot of bird watching on the way, stopping for osprey nests and the like. It is the largest natural inland lake system, and parts of the lake have become a sanctuary for bird watching. An osprey nest. We couldn't stop for long, because Chook wanted to show us the golden shouldered parrots before a fire moved in.
