WHITE-TAIL DEER HUNTS

rule1.gif This area consistently produces big white-tails, in fact, the Idaho state record typical was shot here in 1993. Through a combination of well-scouted tree stands, still hunts, rattling and the occasional drive, you should have a good opportunity to take the buck of your dreams home. The rifle season runs from October 10 to December 1, with the peak of the rut occurring in the third week of November. Bow season begins August 30 and ends September 30. The areas we hunt as well as the tactics we employ will be dictated by the progression of the rut.

ARCHERY BUCKS

During the early season archery hunts we focus primarily on bucks that are using low-lying hay fields. We've also just begun a food-plot program and are looking forward to its results. While not exactly "patternable," deer movement does tend to be much more predictable at this time of year. We spend 2-3 hours in the trees each morning and evening and either relax or relocate stands if necessary during mid-day. The thick cover here is well-suited to bow-hunting and we're seeing some top-notch bucks (and even managing to kill a few of them). Judging by the success of the relatively few bowhunters I've taken, and the bowhunting I've done myself, the archery hunt is nearly as productive as the rifle hunt and actually more consistent.

The November rifle season requires a different approach. By this time of year big bucks' movements are dictated almost entirely by the drive to pass on their genes. We still rely on treestands and mornings and evenings are still most productive, but with the rut in full swing activity can occur at any time of day and the longer a person can stick it out in a stand the better the odds of catching a lunker in a mistake. Weather is the wild card for this hunt. If we get cold weather to increase daytime activity and/or snow to concentrate game then your biggest problem may be deciding which buck to shoot. On the other hand, if it's warm then the deer tend to stay nocturnal and just seeing one can be a challenge. We generally have snow and cold during November but there's certainly no guarantee of it. Nearly limitless security cover insures high survival rates of our bucks through hunting seasons. The occasional brutal winter is the limiting factor on our deer population but 10 years of relatively mild winters has resulted in a very good population and age structure.

2006 Rifle Season Summary

November, 2006 treated us very well. We took a total of 11 bucks for 14 hunters. The hunters took one 3x4 mule deer that wandered a bit too close to one of our whitetail stands, one 16" wide 4x4, two heavy 4x4s scoring around 120, a 4x5 scoring 129, a 5x5 scoring 133, a 5x5 scoring 135, a 4x5 scoring 138, a 6x6 scoring 140, a 6x8 scoring 163 and finally a huge 5x7 that grossed exactly 170.
