The temple of Philae at Aswan. I took it when we went to the sound and light show there. I love the effect of the lights and receding passageway. (Thanksgiving weekend, November 1998)
This is when I played captain for the night. It was 1:30 in the morning in Aswan, and I had to take a ferry to get across to our cruiser that we were staying on. So, as the ferry pulled up to take me across the river, the guy running the boat pointed to me and said something to the effect of, "You, captain." I was a little bewildered and then he pointed to the cabin where the captain sat, so I got the idea. I got to steer the boat across the river, but he kept his hand on the throttle. Afterwards I got him to take a picture of me. Of course I paid baksheesh for it. (Thanksgiving weekend, November 1998)
My friends Jamal and Chanthavone Qureshi at Abu Simbel. Jamal and I were roommates last year at BYU and we both ended up here at CASA for this year. (Thanksgiving weekend, November 1998)
Jamal and I in front of a sign reading "The high dam" at the Aswan High dam. (Believe me, it really does say high dam, even though it's written in Arabic. If you can read Arabic, the names of the two presidents, Gamal Abd Al-Nasser and Anwar Sadat, are especially visible on the sign also.) (Thanksgiving weekend, November 1998)
A dog that decided to pose for me sitting on the wall at the Aswan High dam. (Thanksgiving weekend, November 1998)
Me in the temple at Edfu in front of a statue of the god Osiris, I think. (Thanksgiving weekend, November 1998)
