Triumph of the Nerds

By: Lizzette Ortal

This video, "Triumph of the Nerds" has three parts. This video was narrated by Robert Cringely and owned by Paul Allan. On this video, Robert introduces the different computers in the world and who discovered and manage it.

Robert told that the first computer machine was started in a garage. They called this "machine language" in the early age. By 1975, they discovered the oldest computer in the world which is the Homebrew computer. The nerds called it a new toy. They tried to experiment this new toy how it would work. Paul Allan, David Bunnel and Bill Gates was one of the nerds who tried to experiment it. By that time, Bill Gates was only 19 years old. Paul Allan said that he was so nervous that it wouldn't work for the first time, but it worked and it printed something. That time, people were so thrilled about it.

By 1977, two years after the Homebrew computer, the second computer machine was discovered. They called it the Apple Computer II. Most founders of Apple Computer II were in the age of 20's. One of them was Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs seen computer as his personal tool in the world. Five years later, Apple Computer II became so popular.

By 1978, Microsoft started. Paul Allan and Bill Gates was one of the co-founders of this computer. A few years later, Bill Gates became a president of Microsoft. Another computer which is the IBM was discovered. When IBM was in business, it became the American Business Phenomena. It also became the largest computer of the world.

When Microsoft created windows, Bill Gates saw the opportunity of the lifetime. IBM was trying to get him but he chooses window instead of IBM. By August 24, 1995, Bill Gates introduced the Windows 95. Windows 95 was invented 20 years ago. Bill Gates became a star because of this. Windows 95 became his triumph. He said that he feared of growing old because if he's old, maybe he's not going to be smart as he is now.

There were lot more discoveries and inventions appeared. One of them was MITS whose founder was Ed Roberts. He said that he builded his computer just to play with. By 1978, he sold his company and started his real career as a doctor. Also, Macintosh was discovered. Steve Jobs was the one who introduced it. After a few years in Apple, Steve Jobs left the company. But at the end, he decided to go back with Apple again.

What I think of this video is it's kind of good and interesting, but if your really not interested about it, it's kind of boring to watch. What really got my attention while I was watching this video, was those nerds who discovered and put all their attention and focused it on experimenting and developing their own businesses. They were so young, so talented, and very smart when they started it. I'm really glad that there are those nerdy people making technology better. Without them, I don't know what's going to happen to our future without high technologies.
