ACTIVE COMMUNITY TEAM LORD MAYORAL POLICY LAUNCH AUGUST 22 1995

LISTENING AND LEADING

The Active Community Team has announced its policy launch for the 1995 Council elections for Lord Mayor and Ward One.

The theme for the Active Community Team is LISTENING & LEADING

The issues and policies developed have been community based and not those of a big political party or those of big developers. Formed 12 years ago, the Active Community Team's councillors have been and will continue to be independent community representatives. They do not belong to any political party, but work for a council free from domination by big developers, big business and party politics.

The Active Community Team is a group of residents, young people, retired people, conservationists, retired people, business people, pensioners and families - ordinary community members who want to see their council focused on the community it serves.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

* Open & Honest Local Government

* Community Consultation & Resident Input

* Environment Protection

* Ecologically Sustainable Development

* High Quality Suburban Facilities

* Elimination of Vested Interests

* Proper Council Debates - not Abuse & Mud Slinging

* Escarpment & Foreshore Parks

* Rate Pegging

* Proper Planning

"My experience as past chairperson of various council committees, including Works, Planning, Library, Heritage, Cycleway and Disabled Access Committees, as well as serving on the board of Illawarra Electricity, has enabled me to develop a strong understanding of council procedures & workings" stated Cr Kerrie Christian.

" I am also proud to be known as a strong supporter of environmental protection and enhancement," said Cr Christian, "I want to make sure that Wollongong's parks, reserves, lagoons, creeks, lakes and beaches are beautiful, regenerated and remain our prize assets."

"Wollongong is a lot cleaner & greener than in the past, I've done my share in achieving that and I want that process to continue," stated Cr Christian.

Cr Christian believes that it is important to refocus spending onto community and suburban facilities as well as infrastructure.

Rate increases need to be kept at or below inflation levels according to Cr Christian.

"I believe that there is a need for all in the community to work together, business, industry, unions, governments and public authorities to ensure a better future for Wollongong." commented Cr Christian.
