Dwayne didn't grow up wanting to become a wrestler, he wanted to become a football player. In his early life Dwayne's family moved a lot from city to city. When he was 14 years old his family moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, there he attended Freedom High School. He played football all through out high school, by his Senior year, Dwayne was one of the best defensive tacklers in the State. The head coach of the Miami Hurricanes, Dennis Erickson, liked what he saw in this young man and offered him a 4 time year scholarship, Dwayne accepted.
In his first year in Miami, Dwayne won a national championship, in 1991. To find out more about his Football Career in Miami Click Here. In the year of 1995, Dwayne graduated from college and signed a contract with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. But things didn't go like Dwayne expected them to be. He realized that football wasn't for him and eventually decided to take up professional wrestling.
Wreslting is in Dwayne's Blood, he's a third generation wrestler (his father is former WWF tag champion Rocky Johnson and his grandfather is WWF great "High Chief" Peter Maivia. Dwayne got his start in 1996 in the USWA. There he was Known as Flex Kavana. He won the USWA tag team championship.
On November 17, 1996, Dwayne made his WWF debut at Madison Square Garden,in a six-man tag team bout. He was known Rocky Maivia. Rocky in honor of his father, and Maivia in honor of his grandfather. Being the last man on his team, still in the ring, the Rock gave his opponent a shoulder breaker and pinned him to the delight of the fans. As time when on The Rock was winning match after match. And on February 1997 he captured gold winning the Inter-Continental title. Becoming the youngest IC champion in the history of the WWF.
But things didn't go too well for Rocky, he wasn't getting over with the fans. So The Rock decided to join the Nation of Domination and go heel. Although, his father wasn't too happy with his decision,Rocky Johnson was always a face through out his entire career and didn't want his son to become a heel. But turning heel and joining the Nation proved to be a wise choice. The Rock truly became to shine as a true heel. His character and attitude blossom as a heel. He was the type of heel you love to hate. The Rock's cocky attitude and mic skills evluated him to stardom. After he took over the Nation as the leader The Rock was in for major success. Sure people chanted "Rocky Sucks" and "Die Rocky Die," but he truly had that magic to make the fans chant something. His presence never went unoticed wether you loved him or hated him. Of course his career was so bright, the feud The Nation had with DX truly made The Rock a well known name. His ladder match at Summer Slam proved to be that, being the best match of the whole card. It was also Rocky's first ladder match. Even though he lost his IC tittle to HHH, The Rock was on to bigger and better things. One night the fans were chantting, "ROCKY SUCKS" the next night they were chantting "ROCKY ROCKY ROCKY." The Rest is history.
What makes The Rock such a fan favorite are his suberp mic skills. He is the man with the best catch phrases and the best mic worker in the whole business. His funny interviews and promos are just the funniest and the best! In other words he's ELECTRIFYING!
