Zbornik Genealogy
Mathias Zbornik and Rosalia Kopet Family

the original northeastern Iowa pioneer parents of the clan

Mathias and Rosalia Kopet Zbornik immigrated to the United States in 1853 from Bohemia in the Czech movement into Ohio and Northeastern Iowa.  The family settled into the northeastern Iowa hill counties by 1854, with later generations still there.   Mathias and Rosalia moved the family from the Dubuque/Clayton Co. area, to a small farm a few miles north of Spillville by 1855, and then in 1865 moved to a nice sized farm about a miles to the SE of Old Mission/St. Lucas in Auburn Twp of Fayette Co, where Mathias would live out the remaining twelve years of his life.  Rosalia would eventually move to live with son John Henry in the Ft. Atkinson area, where she would pass away in 1900.  Many of the remaining generations of Zbornik's and related would continue or farm or make their living in the NE Iowa counties, with some migration to other states to include Nebraska with the early Czech movement to that area.

Bohemians came to Johnson and Linn counties because a revolution in their home country failed. Also Bohemians (Czechs) came to Winneshiek county under the leadership of Joseph Spielman. He built a sawmill on the Turkey River. The town of Spillville grew as a typical Bohemian village. Many people of these areas carry Bohemian names.

By the time of the Civil War 30,000 Germans lived in Iowa --- the largest of all groups. Germans settled in Clayton Co., Iowa in early days. The town of Guttenberg was named for the printer, Johann Gutenberg. (In the records two t's were written in error and thus the name.) By 1890 the German population in Iowa was at 127,000. By 1920 half of Iowa's farmers were of German extraction. Farming led other occupations although many were skilled tradesmen.

OBITUARY for James Mathias Zbornik, reported in the Sumner, Iowa Gazette---James Mathias Zbornik was born January 10, 1841, in the village of Dar (Zdar, Chulupy) in Bohemia and died at his home in Sumner, Iowa, on May 30, 1910, at the age of 69 years, 4 months, 29 days. When thirteen years of age he came with his parents to America. They stopped first at Cleveland, Ohio, but soon proceeded to Dubuque, Iowa, where Mathias served an apprenticeship of five years at the printer's trade. He became very proficient and this with his reliability caused him to be trusted with much of the job work. From Dubuque he went to Decorah where he spent two years in the Republic Office. Failing health drove him to the farm. He worked by the month five years for one man. January 21, 1866, he was married to Maragret Ann Siglin. They lived in Clayton county, from there he bought a farm east of West Union, but soon sold that farm and moved to Bethel Township where they farmed until 1901, when they bought just west of Fayette. They lived there seven years. Several of their children having however moved to Sumner, Iowa, the couple joined them there two years ago (1908). They resided in Sumner until Mathias's death which was the final result of a kick from a horse received last fall (1909). Eleven children were born to them, three of which died in infancy. Besides his wife, Mathias leaves eight children. Mrs. B. Forsman, B. Zbornik, Mrs. B. Reimer, John Zbornik, Mrs. B. Moser, all of Sumner; Fred Zbornik, Worthington, Minn., Francis Zbornik, Fredericksburg, Jesse Zbornik of Fayette, one sister Mrs. Kate Kipp of Ossian, and two brothers, John and Joe Zbornik of Ft. Atkinson, all of whom were present at the funeral. The deceased was a faithful, Christian man, a dear husband and a loving father and leaves many friends to mourn his loss. The funeral was held Thursday morning, June 2, 1910, at 10 PM at the Catholic church conducted by Rev. Father Crane of Independence and the interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery (Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Sumner, Bremer Co, Iowa. He is gone but not forgotten.
