James Mathias Zbornik Chronological Biography
1841
.James Mathias Zbornik was born January 10, 1841 in Zdar, Chulupy, Bohemia, the son of Mathias and Rosalia Kopet Zbornik.
1853
.In 1853, Mathias 1816-1875, and Rosalia 1818-1900, and their four oldest children, James Mathias 1867-1910, Mary 1844-1909, Catherine 1849-1879, Franz (1853-1855) immigrated to the United States, sailing form the port of Bremen, Germany, aboard the ship "Patriot."
.The family of six arrived at New York harbor on November, 1853, and apparently traveled to Cleveland for a very short period of time, and then on to Dubuque, Iowa, as their fifth child John H. Zbornik (1854-1927) was born in Dubuque on May 18, 1854. He would be the first of this Zbornik clan born in the USA.
1854
.James Mathias, the oldest son of Mathias and Rosalia Zbornik was thirteen years old when the family arrived in Dubuque. James Mathias served an apprenticeship of five years at the printer's trade in Dubuque from 1854-1859. He is reported to have become very proficient and this with his reliability caused him to be trusted with much of the job work.
1855
.In the meantime, Mathias Sr. would buy a farm of 40 acres two miles N by NE of Spillville, in Winneshiek County, Iowa, and sometime in the late winter or spring of 1855 would move the family, wife Rosalia and children Mary, Catherine, Frranz and John H. to this farm.
.Shortly after the move to the Spillville farm Franz (1853-1855) would pass away at the age of two years, being the first of the Zbornik Clan to die in the USA.

.On November 10, 1858, Mathias Sr., age 42, signed his naturalization papers of US Citizenship in Decorah, Iowa. At this time four children are on the farm, one has died and the oldest James Mathias, 17 yrs. is still in Dubuque working as a printer.
1859
.Sometime in 1859 or perhaps 1860, James Mathias Zbornik, age 18+ moves from Dubuque to Decorah, Iowa and works the next two years as a printer for the "Republic Office," at which time his obituary reports due to poor health he was driven to farming. (??)
1861
.In about 1861+, James Mathias, age 20+, apparently moved to the area of Farmersburg in Clayton Co, Iowa, and worked for one farmer as a hand five years, but would remain in the area nearly ten years, from the age of 20-30, as a farm hand until about 1870+.

OBITUARY for James Mathias Zbornik, reported in the Sumner, Iowa Gazette---James Mathias Zbornik was born January 10, 1841, in the village of Dar (Zdar, Chulupy) in Bohemia and died at his home in Sumner, Iowa, on May 30, 1910, at the age of 69 years, 4 months, 29 days. When thirteen years of age he came with his parents to America. They stopped first at Cleveland, Ohio, but soon proceeded to Dubuque, Iowa, where Mathias served an apprenticeship of five years at the printer's trade. He became very proficient and this with his reliability caused him to be trusted with much of the job work. From Dubuque he went to Decorah where he spent two years in the Republic Office. Failing health drove him to the farm. He worked by the month five years for one man. January 21, 1866, he was married to Maragret Ann Siglin. They lived in Clayton county, from there he bought a farm east of West Union, but soon sold that farm and moved to Bethel Township where they farmed until 1901, when they bought just west of Fayette. They lived there seven years. Several of their children having however moved to Sumner, Iowa, the couple joined them there two years ago (1908). They resided in Sumner until Mathias's death which was the final result of a kick from a horse received last fall (1909). Eleven children were born to them, three of which died in infancy. Besides his wife, Mathias leaves eight children. Mrs. B. Forsman, B. Zbornik, Mrs. B. Reimer, John Zbornik, Mrs. B. Moser, all of Sumner; Fred Zbornik, Worthington, Minn., Francis Zbornik, Fredericksburg, Jesse Zbornik of Fayette, one sister Mrs. Kate Kipp of Ossian, and two brothers, John and Joe Zbornik of Ft. Atkinson, all of whom were present at the funeral. The deceased was a faithful, Christian man, a dear husband and a loving father and leaves many friends to mourn his loss. The funeral was held Thursday morning, June 2, 1910, at 10 PM at the Catholic church conducted by Rev. Father Crane of Independence and the interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery (Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Sumner, Bremer Co, Iowa. He is gone but not forgotten.
