This is a little history about the Peter Seiler family and where they came from. This is his obituary as it appeared in the Sauk City newspaper in January of 1907.

Peter Seiler Passes Away

Peter Seiler, one of the first settlers of the town of Roxbury, WI, and for the past nine years a resident of this city (Sauk City) died at his home Tuesday morning, January 22, 1907 at 5 o'clock, aged 73 years, 10 months, and 5 days. The cause of his death being heart and liver trouble. Although he had been ailing this past year, it was not until seven weeks ago that his sickness became serious, since which time until his death he was confined to the bed.

Mr. Seiler was born in Elsas Lothringen, Germany, March 17, 1833. In 1847, at the age of fourteen he came to America with his mother Ana. His father John, died on the voyage. Peter settled in the town of Roxbury, where he lived until nine years ago when he came to Sauk City. He was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Bur, who survives him. The ceremony being performed in the St. Norbertus Catholic Church in Roxbury, by Rev. Fr. Inamer on May 29, 1855. This union was blessed with twelve children - seven sons and five daughters - of whom nine survive. One son, Peter Nicklaus, died at eight years, and the others in infancy. The family always resided on the same farm in Roxbury, being that now occupied by Jos. Balweg.

The surviving children are: John Peter of Colwich, KS; Maria Elizabeth Baier of Troy, WI; Susan Buys of Marquette, MI; Leonard of Shell Lake, WI; Fredrick of Clyde, OK; John of Roxbury, WI; Henrich of Sexton, IA; Maria Sylbilla Bier of Sauk City, WI; and Elizabeth Wildt of Sauk City, WI.

Mr. Seiler was an honest, upright man - a good citizen, friend and neighbor.


Peter's wife Elizabeth was born in 1840 and died on March 23, 1914 at age 84 years, 7 months, 27 days. His mother Ana was born in 1794, probably in Elsas Lothringen, Germany. She died March 15, 1886 at age 92 years. She is buried in the St. Norbert's Cemetery in Roxbury. Peter and Elizabeth are buried in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sauk City.
