BUSINESS

NORTH End: Interchange, IA 60 and US 18, Sheldon, O'Brien County

Recent business routes are very sloppy with "End" signage (or along the route, for that matter), and this one is not an exception.

Now we're closer to I-90 than any other interstate. Turn around and it's 58 miles to I-29 in South Dakota from here - still closer than downtown Sioux City.

Typically, the 18 shield on the left would have an ahead arrow under it.

Pay attention, other cities: This is how the business district should be signed on the bypass, NOT by repeating the name on the main signs.

Jason points out that these signs are on the opposite sides of the ramp than they should be. The sign pointing to destinations to the right is on the left side of the offramp, and the sign pointing to the left is on the right side.

Briar Cliff University students did a research project on the Sheldon bypass's effect on businesses; see this Sioux City Journal article. But the first sign on 18 west of here doesn't have a "Business 60" attached, and it gets worse from there.

The sign at left implies that Business 60 does not run with 18, yet the sign at far right of the right picture (southbound old 60) implies that it does.

So does this sign assembly on eastbound 18 - except you can see that the sign at far left doesn't have a "Business 60" with it. The business route just disappears for the next two miles.

Ashton can still be reached by going straight ahead, but now the road is just Old Highway 60.

The Sheldon bypass replaces the entire two-lane stretch of IA 60 in O'Brien County.
