Welcome to the wonderful world of Herky the Hawk, famed mascot of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Herky came into existence in October 1948 as a drawing created by Dick Spencer and has been present at the university ever since. Herky first patroled the sidelines of a football game in 1959, however that stint was short lived. It wasn't until 1962 that Herky came to stay.
