Strayer's in NE Iowa and SW Wisconsin
who removed from Penn in the mid 1800's


....Terry, I would be very interested in any info you collect regarding the Strayer line in the Prairie du Chien area and perhaps having offspring moving into Iowa.  
....I have copied and pasted a little of my Strayer data below and marked the three siblings on my Strayer line that settled into Winneshiek Co, Iowa, in the 1850's, in what would become the Freeport/Decorah area. This location is 30+ miles to the west of Prairie du Chien, WI.
....I grew up in the NE Iowa and SW Wisconsin area of the Strayer's that we are interested in.  Only recently, before your post did I discover that there was a Strayer who removed to Prairie du Chien.  I was looking for data on my George Strayer at the time.  I do not, however, have any information on the Prairie du Chien line.  
....I am interested in the Prairie line, your line, as there may be a link at to why/how my George removed to NE Iowa, plus I think some of your line as ended up in Iowa.
....I have a lot of new work to do on my Strayer web page, but it will be awhile to before I get at it again.  I will archive your post and let you know when I find new data or update my Strayer pages.

Strayer Complete Information to date

....My Jacob Strayer (parents, John and Jane (??) Strayer, was born in Crawford County, PA in 1823, and died in 1897 in Lafayette Co, WI.
....In about 1855 Jacob and his wife Sarah (possibly Lindsey) moved to Bridgeport, LaFayette County, WI. 
....Jacob and Sarah had four children.  This info is confirmed from a marriage certificate and a History of Crwford and Richland Counties, written between 1880 an 1890.
1....George Strayer, b1851 in PA,  died about 1899 in Ashland County, WI.
2....Susan J.,  b 1853 in PA,  (either the child or the second wife) in 1898 in Crawford Co (either the child or the second wife of Jacob).
3...John Henry, b Oct 9, 1858, Prairie du Chien,  Grant County WI.  John Henry was a railroad man who worked for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy RR I think as I have a picture of him at Maiden Rock, WI.  John Henry married Martha  Mitchell (daughter of Susan and Ebezner Mitchell of Iowa and Vermont).  John Henry and Martha left WI in 1890's for Fl and TB cure.  John and Martha moved to FL with all their kids.  John died not long after and was buried in Palataka FL, the children and Martha lived in Brunswick GA and then my grandfather moved to Jacksonville, FL where I was born. 
4....Mary, b 1863.  Apparently stayed in WI.

.....Jacob Strayer's first wife, Sarah died in 1873 and he then married Susan Mitchell Miles a Vermont native.  She had 7 children from a former marriage.  One, Martha married Jacob's son John Henry.

Terry's requests:
.....I am searching for information on Jacob (1823) and Sarah Strayer who went to WI in 1855 from PA with son George. 
..... I need confirmation of Jacob's parents (John and Jane ???) and Sarah's maiden name.  
......Also why WI--?  I know that John Henry was a Railroad man, but I don't know why Jacob left PA.

....Apparently the Strayer connection back to Penn is with your Jacob Strayer b1823 and my John Strayer b 1818, as they are of the same generation.
.....John's father Valentine, may have been a sibling of your Jacob's from the list below.  I do not know how complete my data is as all is "stolen" form internet info.  Nothing I have in my files indicates a John Strayer married to a Jane (?) with a son Jacob (1823).   Which if your info is correct on Jacob's parents, means my data for the Penn lines is missing some basic info.

Info for Terry*****  John Strayer is my gggrandfather.  He removed to Missouri in 1838 from Penn, as a 20 year old young man.  He came with two Heckart families.  As near as I can tell the Strayer's and Heckart's on my line were all millwrights, river men and farmers along the Susquehanna River, and closely associated with each other, as well as all of the other Penn German's in the state.  John Strayer married one of the Heckart daughters and would have a life long working relationship as a miller with Eliz brother John Adam Jr. Heckart.  In 1851, I have discovered they may an exploratory trip up the Mississippi River, probably past Prairie du Chien, to Lansing, Iowa, traveled up the Upper Iowa River Valley or over the Indian hill trails into newly created Winneshiek Co. about 30 miles inland to the west.  They made original land entries into a great deal of prime milling sites along the Upper Iowa and its tributaries in the Decorah/Freeport area.  They returned to Missouri in 1851, sold a mill property and other holding and removed to Winn Co in 1852 where they built the first major mill at Freeport.  Andrew and Catherine Strayer Sheetz went with them, with Andrew taking up a major farm site on the river bottom just downstream from the mill and Freeport.  An older offspring of that line remains on that farm today, and I keep in contact with her.

Info for Terry*****Catharine Strayer and Andrew Sheetz apparently had moved to NE Missouri to join John Strayer her brother sometime around 1850+.  I have just recently discovered that not only the families of John Strayer and Adam Heckart removed from Monroe County, Missouri, to Winneshiek Co., Iowa in late 1852, but also Andrew Sheetz and family.  I have not found any trace of John and Catherine's brother George Strayer in Missouri, and have not been able to trace his exact removal from Penn to Ohio to Winneshiek Co, Iowa, where he joined John and Catherine, apparently in 1858, then headed to the gold field, maybe with John Adam Jr. Heckart (who made three trips by oxen, the last in 1865, with his family to start a major ranch in Butte Co, Calif).  In 1860, George returned and married.  He would remain at Freeport and farm the remainder of his life.  Thus the three siblings on my line that removed to Iowa, John, Catherine, George would live out their lives in the Freeport area of Winneshiek Co, Iowa.,******

Information for Terry*******Obit: George Strayer; On Thursday last at this home in Freeport Mr. George Strayer died after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Strayer was born in 1835 and was but a little past his sevetheith birthday at the time of his death. he came to Freeport in 1858 and after a few months went to California where he remained but a short time, returning to Freeport in 1860. Here he was married to Miss Kirkland, who with four sons, survive him. The sons are Aaron of Chicago and William of Baker city, Oregon, both lawyers, Frank a physician at Spencer Wis., and James of Calmar. One son died in youth, and the only daughter, Mrs. F. W. Daubney died several years ago. In his dealings with the public Mr. Strayer was a every way a clean, reputable man, and a good citizen. the funeral was held Mondy afternoon, Rev. M. Willett officiating.******
