He married MARIE-CATHERINE AMENDT 1757 in PA. She was born November 09, 1743, and died 1820 in Berkeley Co., VA.

Notes for JOHN-NICHOLAS STRAYER, SR.:

John Nicolas Strayer was reportedly born in December of 1733, in the Mosel River Valley, near Elinnach, Traebach or the Traben/Trohrbach area of Germany to Johanes Matthias Stroeher and his wife Maragethe Schmid. They emigrated from Germany in 1749, on the ship "Priscilla", under Captain James Arnot, landing on September 11, 1749. He was yet under the age of sixteen where a signature was required, so his name was not on the ships manifest. From the records of the Quittophilla Lutheran Chruch it is apparent that he remained at or near that area for some 6-10 years, probably working at a trade to help support his father's growing family. From about 1759, when he married Marie Cahterine until 1762, he and Michael Worm began "proving up" on a piece of land in Chanceford Twp., of York Co., PA. their third child Andreas, who died young, was born and baptized in that neighborhood.

On August 2, 1762, 100 acres was warranted to Nicholas Streer in Chanceford Twp. of what is now York Co., PA, and plats also list a 393 acre tract, named "Stoney Ribs", owned by Nicholas Streer and Michael Wurm together.

i. JOHN-MICHAEL5 STRAYER, b. December 24, 1759, Lebanon Twp., Lancaster Co., PA; d. March 23, 1812, Berkeley Co., VA.

Notes for JOHN-MICHAEL STRAYER:

He was a Private in Captain Davenport's Co., 3rd PA Regiment command, under Lt. Colonel Lambert Cadwallader. Apparently he served tours as a substitute private for several other individuals. It was not uncommon for gentry to "hire" substitutes to serve in the army for them.

Notes for JOHN-NICHOLAS STRAYER, JR.:

John Nicholas Strayer, Jr., was born to John Nicholas Stayer, Sr., and Marie Catherine, about 1766, in Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA. Very little is known about Nicholas, Jr.,; this is due in part to the fact that he predeceased his Father by October 10, 1805, leaving a widow and five sons. His wife, Marie Catherine Stayley, was the daughter of John Jacob Stayley, Jr., who had been a next door neighbor to John Nicholas Strayer, Sr., in Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA, and she was the granddaughter of John Jacob Stehli, Sr., who immigrated with Johanes-Mattes Stroeher on the ship "Priscilla" in 1749. At the time of John Nicholas, Sr's death, in 1809, the two elder grandsons had reached the age of twenty-one or more, and in the will of Catherine Stayley Strayer and these mature grandsons, were given control of the Dry Run Plantation, with the provision that stated amounts were to be paid annually for seven years to their aunt Susannah Strayer Couchman and uncle John Strayer. On April 13, 1812, the Dry Run Plantation was sold by Jacob and wife, Adam, and the widowed Catherine on behalf of her three remaining underage sons, to Mathew Ransom, of Jefferson Co., VA, for the amount of $6,000.

Catherine Stayley Strayer later migrated with her three younger sons, John P., Nicolas and Michel to Logan Co., OH, circa 1828-1834, and is believed to have died August 26, 1841, and to be buried in the Hurst Cemetery, in Logan Co., OH. The census of 1820 for Virginia shows Catherine dwelling with her son John.

46. JOHN6 STRAYER (VALENTINE5, JOHANES-MATHIAS4, JOHANES-MATTES3 STROEHER, JOANNIS2 STROH, JOANNIS1) was born July 13, 1818 in Lykens, Dauphin Co., PA, on a farm., and died September 11, 1878 in Freeport, Winneshiek Co., Iowa. He married ELIZABETH HECKART December 24, 1840 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Missouri, daughter of JOHN HECKART and MAGDALENA SNYDER. She was born March 12, 1821 in Northumberland Co., PA, and died March 03, 1888 in Freeport, Winneshiek Co. Iowa.

Notes for JOHN STRAYER:

Elizabeth Heckart, age 19, married John Strayer in 1840, at Shelbyville, Missouri. John was 22 and born in 1818.

John Strayer had migrated west in about 1836 at age 18, probably to join the Heckart's in the mill business. He may have known the family back east. He was involved in the running of mills with the Heckart's during his stay in Shelbyville.

The Strayer Family, Source Dr. Richard L. Strayer, 7901 Mary Ellen Ave, North Hollywood, CA 91605 (1/24/1981)---Five large separate groups of Strayer's immigrated from Europe to America. Most were from Germany, some Swiss as apparently the Strayer's migrated back and forth across the borders. One group was from Holland, and this group may be connected in Europe as apparently the lived on and crossed the border between Holland and Germany. One immigrant Russian family adopted the Strayer name as their's was too long and Jewish at an inappropriate time. Source book: "History of John Peter Strayer of York County, Penn, Published 1968.

Notes on the Walkersville Mill---Adam Heckart and John Strayer operated the grist mill at Walkersville, Missouri, before they both took their families north to Freeport, Iowa. In 1838 David O. Walker built a mill on the bank of the Salt River some four miles northwest of Shelbina and about five miles southwest of Shelbyville. At that time there was no Shelbina and people of this area took their grain to Walker mill for grinding. Big stone burrs were used in grinding the grain in the old mill at Walkersville and during the mid 1900 some were dug out of the sand near the river and brought to the library lawn in Shelbina.

In 1853, John and Elizabeth pioneered in the newly opened territory of northeastern Iowa. There is an indication that John Strayer and a Heckart brother of Elizabeth moved their families three hundred miles north to construct and operate a mill at the area which would become Freeport on the Upper Iowa River. The Upper Iowa was a big fast running white water river at that time which offered excellent mill sites and the area was being flooded by white settlers when it was taken from the Native Americans of the area and opened to whites. Freeport was platted in 1854. In 2000 Freeport sits in the east end of the valley which is now dominated by Decorah, Iowa. Freeport is about gone except for a few houses, and now a super wally.

The Strayer's apparently ended up with a major amount of the land in the Freeport river bottoms around the mill and plotted much of Freeport along with farming the rich river valley. They would raise their family and die here.

Elizabet died peacefully at home in Freeport, Iowa, on Sat., March 3, 1888, at age 67. Her health was poor for two years and failed rapidly in the last two weeks. Her last words were, "Don't feel bad, dear children, we will soon meet again. The Lord has come to take me home." She was unselfish in life, religious, comforting, helped needy folks, and had many friends. The land the Old Freeport Methodist Church and cemetery sits on was donated and supported by the Strayer's. They are buried in the far rear of the cemetery in a raised family plot.

They set up a mill, as they had been mill wrights in Shelbyville. In 1871 Elizabeth Strayer married Albert E. Manchester originally from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He was a railroad man and they resided in Mason city and Dubuque, Iowa until 1893, when Albert was called to Milwaukee as Superintendent of Motive Power (locomotives) of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul Railway System. The couple would live the rest of their lives in Milwaukee. Elizabeth died April 12, 1904 at the age of 58, at her home, 2619 Wells St. Milwaukee, Wisc. Her daughter Alice Elizabeth Mooney lived in the Milwaukee area.

Paper Article, March 1887---We have had some first class teachers in Fayette, whom we are always glad to welcome when returning after years of absence in home duties and as teachers of children of Thier own. One of these gave us a call the others day, known to us twenty-four years ago as Miss Libbie Strayer, now Mrs. Manchester, of Mason City. She was one of the few teachers who then persisted in her calling term after term, and made an enviable record in a profession not then, as now, crowded with applicants for place at any price.

56. VALENTINE E.7 STRAYER (JOHN6, VALENTINE5, JOHANES-MATHIAS4, JOHANES-MATTES3 STROEHER, JOANNIS2 STROH, JOANNIS1) was born November 12, 1848 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Missouri, and died 1937 in Fayette, IA. He married MARY ELIZABETH PARSONS December 11, 1873 in West Union, IA, daughter of DAVID PARSONS and ADELIA BUTLER. She was born January 10, 1852 in Elgin, IL, and died June 26, 1944.

Notes for VALENTINE E. STRAYER:

Notes: Valentine was born in Shelbyville, Missouri, November 12, 1848, of Elizabeth Heckart and John Strayer. His father and wife's brother Adam were running a grist mill about 5 miles SW of Shelbyville on a branch of the Salt River. The Heckart's were mill wrights and John apparently came into the Shelbyville area because of family connections back in PA. when Valentine was six, John Strayer and Adam Heckart migrated to the Freeport, Iowa area and set up a mill on the Upper Iowa River (then called the Iowa River). Valentine grew up in Freeport, and then at age 18+ went to UIU at Fayette to attend college from 1867-1869, which was quite unusual for the day. Very few men even went on to a "higher school" at this time. Valentine roomed on the 3rd floor of the College Hall, the only building on campus at the time. There were no stairs so ladders were used. He range the bell and did janitor work for tuition. While at UIU Valentine was well known for many cleaver and undetected pranks. He Graduated from UIU, July 1, 1869, in the 11th commencement of the college. At graduation he gave a presentation on "Chance", while his sister Ruth Strayer spoke on, "To seem and to be". While at UIU he was very involved with literary societies like "Zethegathean", and gave many well spoken production. Valentine took a teaching postilion in Calmar, Iowa, apparently in the fall of 1869. In 1871-1874, he became the Principal of Schools at Calmar. While going to UIU he must have met Mary Elizabeth Parsons, the daughter of an early Fayette pioneer family who came from Elgin, IL to Fayette in 1856. Valentine and Mary Parson were married at West Union, December 11, 1873. He was 25, she 21. During the summer of 1874, Valentine went into the Hardware Business in Calmar until 1893. The business also sold coal brought in on the train which came in from the Marion, Iowa area. Valentine was well known for his interest in civic and educational affairs, serving on the school board for 17 years, the city council for 12 years and as Mayor of Calmar for 3 years. In 1894, the family sold their Calmar interests and bought a farm just north of Fayette. They move shortly after that to Cresco for one year, then came back to Fayette, and about 1896 bought the Col. Aaron Brown Farm, about 4 miles SW of Fayette (just one mile south and the next section west of Eagle's Point). In 1918, the family moved into Fayette. Valentine died at his home in Fayette, Iowa, on November 14, 1937, at the age of 89 years, after a brief illness. Service was at Belles Funeral Home, with burial at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette. He left his wife Mary Parsons, three daughters, two sons, and 11 great-grandchildren. In 1937, his children were located at: Genevieve Belknapp in McIntosh, SD; Robert in Marion, Iowa; Katherine Dennis, Cleveland, OH; Reuben, Chamberlain, SD; Winnifred Hunt, Fayette. Valentine was known as well educated, a community participant and leader, friendly and kind. He like to camp, hunt and fish, often making long trips to the Dakotas or north to the Great Lakes.

Note from the Calmar correspondent for the Decorah Republican, May 6, 1902: Vol. Strayer was up from his Fayette county farm several days last week looking after the repairs of his store building damaged by the recent fire. A plate glass front is now one of the many impartments which make the building one of the most attractive hardware stores in the county. (apparently Valentine retained the Hardware Store in Calmar as property, even after buying the Col. Brown farm at Fayette)

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH PARSONS:

Moved to Fayette, IA, with her family in 1857, therefore an early pioneer of the area. Mary Parsons attended the Fayette schools and Upper Iowa University. She taught several terms, and married Valentine E. Strayer of Calmar in West Union, in 1873. Mary probably met Valentine while both were UIU students.

Mary joined the Fayette Methodist church August 26, 1896 and was very active in church activities until here hearing failed. In later years she wrote very remarkable letters to her children, kept her own home and had a keen mind. She like to garden and had many flowers, was artistic and continued to make hooked rugs until 91 years old. All of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. Mary was healthy to the day before her death. Services were at the Belles funeral Home and interment was at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette.

Obit; Mary E. Parsons Strayer, was born in Elgin, Illinois, January 10, 1852. Her parents were David and Adalia Parsons, who came to Fayette Iowa, in 1857. She was married at West Union, at the residence of her sister, to Valentine E. Strayer of Calmar, in 1873, and honeymooned in Howard and Winneshiek counties. She was the mother of five children, Genevieve Belknapp who resided in McIntosh, South Dakota. Robert E. Strayer in Marion, Iowa. Catherine Dennis in Cleveland Ohio. Reuben A. of Fayette and Winnifred Hunt of Fayette. She had one brother Wallace who resided in California and two sisters Julia Waterbury of West Union and Lucretia Forde's of Topeka, Kansas.

---June 29, 1944. Mrs. V. E. Strayer found dead at home. Fatal heart attack Tuesday morning caused the death of 92 year old resident in Fayette. Mary Parsons Strayer, was found dead on the stairs of her home Tuesday morning about 9 am. She had come down stairs and unlocked the outside door, and was returning when she passed away of a heart attack. Apparently she had been as well as usual on Monday and had done her washing and worked in her garden. Her daughter Winnifred Strayer Hunt, came to the house and went on out to work in the garden. After a few minutes she returned to the house and found her mother, as related. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Genevieve Belknap, McIntosh, SD; Mrs. Kate Dennis of Cleveland, OH; Mrs.. W. R. Hunt of Fayette, Robert of Marion, and Reuben A. of Chamberlain, SD. Funeral services will probably be held Friday afternoon, but final arrangements are awaiting the arrival of Mrs. Belknap and Rube Strayer who were expected last night.

Notes for RAOUL ROBERT STRAYER:

An interview by BZ with wife Marc in 1995: Raoul graduated from Marion High School in 1921, worked a year during the days in a grocery store and in the evenings at an oil station. He saved, borrowed and got a little help from "dad" and went to Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa, in 1922, but ran out of money after two years. He took a job with the Lynn County engineer's office and went back to school. He graduated in 1927 with a B. S. in general engineering. Raoul lined up a job with the Link Belt Co., making elevators on 300 West Pershing Road, Chicago, IL, near the stock yards. He would have to sit and draw, and in hot weather the smell of the yards was oppressive. He worked there for four years. In 1930, Raoul suffered a ruptured appendix. While in the hospital he met an admitting nurse by the name of Marce, who would become his wife for life. Raoul worked another 1 1/2 years at Link. He wanted out of Chicago badly. One of his friends said that General Motors needed adjustors for their Insurance Company, so he went to Omaha and got the job. The couple would marry February 13, 1932. He was working in Sioux City, Iowa at the time and she still working at her joy in Chicago. Raoul borrowed $75 to go to Chicago, they got married and rode the train back to Sioux City. Raoul was making $149 per month at the time and apartments cost $75 per month. The couple had $300 between them. They lived in Sioux City from February 1932 to November 1932. Raoul's job moved them to Omaha, and after three months they transferred to Des Moines until 1936, then to Minneapolis from 1936-1942. During the war years he was located in Cleveland for the war effort and into the Fisher Body Plant of General Motors which was making B-29's by the end of the war. Raoul worked as an inspector in the plant until late 1945 when his job moved them back to Des Moines for the rest of their lives. He had developed multiple sclerosis in the 1940's while working for G.M., but kept working with the company for 22 years. He was retired by the company and did not work again until 1963 when he went to work for Preferred Risk for three years. He had some operations including a prostate. He went to the State House looking for a job in the Insurance Department, but ended up with a job in the Tax department for 11 years and was involved with starting the state withholding tax. He retired again in 1973.
