14. Johan Stephen Steffes (Joannes Joseph, Peter , Servatius, Johann ) was born on 19 November 1816 at Müellenbach. He married Anna Margaret Mueller, daughter of Adam Mueller and Magdeline Fornbach, on 2 December 1843 at St. Peter And Paul Catholic Church, Williamsville.

They were married by Rev Noethen (?). Their witnesses were Adam Mueller and Margaret Fornabach, parents of the bride. His parents were Johann Joseph Steffes and Catharina Jansen. After their marriage, Johan and Margaret moved to Lake Co., Illinois where they lived on a farm until 1855 when they moved to the Fort Atkinson area. Johan filed his second papers for citizenship in Winneshick Co. In 1894, John and Margaret moved to Carroll Co. and both died there. They were buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton.

Paragraph 1. In the above named town the passengers will receive their tickets to Antwerpen. Every adult can take two Centner and each child one Centner of luggage with them free of cost. For extra weight there will be an extra charge of one 1/16 Thaler per Centner.
Paragraph 2. The cost of going through customs at the border will be paid by the ship's loader, all false statements and not mentioned effects are the responsibility of the owner.
Paragraph 3. The overnight lodging in the cities has to be paid by the passengers, however, the luggage will be transferred from ship to ship and also to the train.
Paragraph 4. The possessor of this contract must arrive two days prior to the time of his departure in the mentioned seaport. Lateness or false statements concerning the ages of the children may cost the possessor all rights and claims mentioned in paragraph 9. Furthermore, the possessor has to pay the additional charge.
Paragraph 5. Persons with contagious sickness cannot board ship, but will be put aboard on the first leaving ship after full recovery. The persons have no claim of compensation while detained.
Paragraph 6. By law the following persons cannot land in New York. Mentally ill, oned eyed, blind, deaf and dumb, women with small children and pregnant women without men, persons over the age of sixty without one able bodied member of the family.
Paragraph 7. All passengers have to bring their own bedding, eating and drinking essentials, if not, one straw mattress and a wool blanket plus tin ware and sea grass pillow can be obtained for two or three Thalers per person.
Paragraph 8. Their sea provisions contain of sea biscuits, salt beef, and salt pork, potatoes , peas, beans, grits, rice, and flour plentiful and good according to law and regulations . The provisions are under the supervision of the captain. He will have the ready meals distributed to the passengers. Some passengers must help the cook in the kitchen.
Paragraph 9. Their passage and sea provisions cost of the passengers are: 2 grownups over twelve years 36 Thaler 1 child from eight to twelve 32 Thaler 3 children from one to eight 22 Thaler 66 ----------------- 170 Thaler has to be paid under todays agreement.
Paragraph 10. At a down payment of one-third according to the contract you will be given the day of departure. To those who have paid the full amount, will be paid 12 silver pennies per grownup and 8 silver pennies per child per day if there should be any delay of departure either by strong winds or bad weather. Also the shiploader should pay for lodging and food.
Paragraph 11. On the assigned ship every booked passenger has to obey the ship's law and obtains a place on the middle deck, free transportation of luggage and of needed free medical aide, a bedstead a cooking place in the kitchen, sweet water, light and wood at the arrival in the departure harbor at Coblenz for 48 hours on board.
Paragraph 12. Their shiploader is obligated to deliver the immigrants and their effects to thee in the contract named destination even if the ship should have any delay or accident due to bad weather.
Paragraph 13. If the passengers travel with a conductor it is guaranteed that their luggage will arrive in time.
Paragraph 14. The contractor agrees that all conflicts and disagreements are best settled by the Prussian Consulate in whatever seaport it occurs and has to accept whatever verdict the referee hands down.
Paragraph 15. This contract cannot be broken by one party alone and is not transferable to any other ship. . (hereafter cited as Steffes-Miessen, Ship's Contract). They emigrated to America on 1 November 1854 on the 'Katherine.'

51. Gertrude Steffes (Johan Stephen , Joannes Joseph, Peter, Servatius , Johann) was born in 1844 at Good Lake, Illinois. She married Herman Heinrich (HH) Kuennen, son of Gerhard Henrick Kuennen and Maria Anna< Timmerman, on 11 July 1864 at St. Lucas, Fayette Cty, Iowa.

The book, Who's Who in Fayette County provided information on several of the families living in the St. Lucas area. "Kuennen, Henry H., farmer, Section 8, P.O. Old Mission, born in Germany, married to Gertrude Steffes, who died in 1869 and had 3 children; Maggie, John and Theresa. He came to this country with his father, George H., in 1850 and he is now 86 years old. He first settled in Pennsylvania for two years, then he moved to Indiana. In 1854 he came to Fayette County. In 1859 he settled on the home farm. He has 160 acres, valued at $25 an acre. His wife is Cecelia Foreman, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1850 and they have two children; Louis and Magdalene. They are members of St. Lucas Catholic Church."

Kunnen, Henry M., farmer, Section 8 (Auburn township); PO Old Mission; born in Germany in 1835. Married Gertrude Staffus, who died in 1869; had three children --- Maggie, John and Teresa. Came to this country with his father, George H., in 1850; he is now 86 years of age; first settled in Pennsylvania two years, when he removed to Indiana, and in 1854, came to this county; in 1859, he settled on his present estate; has a farm of 160 acres, valued at $25 per acre. His present wife, Celia Foreman, was born in Pennsylvania in 1850; have two children --- Louis L. and Magdalene. Both members of Their St. Lucas Catholic Church.

He married Maria Theresa Bodensteiner, daughter of Michael Georg Bodensteiner and Barbara Margaretha Bausch, on 28 May 1861 at St. Lucas. He married Cecilia Foreman, daughter of Harmon Foreman and Clarissa Phillipu, in January 1871 at St Lucas. He died on 3 November 1919 at St. Lucas at age 85; buried at St. Lucas Cemetery.

Mathias filed application No. 176 for a Timber Culture Patent. On March 2, 1897, the land office at Alliance published a Timber Culture Proof notification -- ' Notice is herby given that Mathias Steppes of Gilchrist, Ne b. has filed notice of intention to make final proof before M . J. Blewett, clerk district court, at his office in Harrison, Neb. on the 27th day of February, 1897, on timber culture application No. 176 for the S1/2 NW 1/4 and n 1/4 of Sec. 3 4 in Township 34, n. of range 54 w. He names as witnesses, Paul Serres, Joseph Roos, Frank I. Meyer and John F. Meyer, all of Gilchrist. On March 2, 1897, Mathias Steffes of Roselle, Iowa received Final Certificate #830 for Timber Culture for 160 acres in Sec. 34, Township 34N of range 54W from the land office at Chadron, Nebraska. Mathias testified that he was age 46, Post Office address, Roselle, Carroll County. He stated that he was born in McHenry County, State of Illinois. He testified that he had planted 10 acres in cottonwoods, ash, maple and black walnut and that all the trees had been killed by drouth.

They appear in the 1900 census in Festina. Living with them were Katherine's parents, Joseph and Katryn Haubrick. William and Katherine moved from Iowa to South Dakota. In the spring of 1910, William along with Matt Henkels and Peter and Mary Herbst migrated west to Plevena. William ran the meat market in Plevna for a while, and later they purchased the hotel. Katherine served 35-cent roast beef dinners to her boarders at the Steffes Hotel.

The Steffes helped to build Saint Anthony's Catholic Church in Plevna. The altar in the local church came from Saint Anthony's Church in Iowa. William and Katherine Steffes celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1928. William passed away in the Miles City Hospital in 1931. Katherine passed away in 1944.

My parents, William and Catherine Steffes, came to Plevna, Montana in 1910 and took a homestead. I, Joseph, was born in St. Lucas, Iowa on June 17, 1889 and came in an emigrant car to Montana and located eight miles south of Plevna. I filed on a homestead and kept busy in proving up on the land, such as erecting buildings and building fences. It seemed there was always a shortage of moisture in the summer and some of the winters were hard and cold and we always welcomed a Chinook.
During the depression wheat was 28 cents a bushel and beef sold at 3 cents a pound. The neighbors were from one to two miles apart. Some of them were the Chauncy Ettles, the Joe Wenzes and the Bill Thielens.
I had gone to elementary and high school in Iowa and to Duluth, Minnesota to learn the harness trade, before I came to Montana.
In 1914 Rose Doonan and I were married at Ipswich, South Dakota. We had eleven children; William, Gertrude, Bernard, Leo, Raphael, Marie, Carrol, Lawrence, Francis, Joe, Jr. and Margaret Mary. I have thirty three grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren all of which are well and happy."
In the fall of 1920 Joe sold unimproved Northern Pacific land located three miles north and three miles east of Plevna to Friedrich and Magdalena Burkle. Joe was very active in the community. He was a County Commissioner from 1952-58. He was also Plevna's mayor for three years. During the depression, he was foreman of the W.P.A. (a work program) and helped build roads and dams. He helped put in the new telephone line in the area in 1931.
Joe was also very family oriented. He was a 4-H leader for 24 years and also served on the school board for several years. He helped build the Catholic Church for the community. In 1962 Joe built the U.S. Post Office for Baker.

He died in May 1977 at Plevna, Fallon Co., Montana, at age 87. Rose Doonan died in 1930 at Plevena.

Ben died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at the Lutheran Home, Strawberry Point, after a long illness.
Bernard (Ben) Leo Mihm Sr. was born July 2, 1904, at St. Lucas, Their son of Clemens W. and Margaret Rose (Kuennen) Mihm. He received his education from the St. Lucas School. Ben married Marie M. Manderfield on May 13, 1930, at St. Lucas. Ben farmed in the Hawkeye and Wadena areas for many years. On their farm, Ben raised honeybees and worked with animals.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wadena, and later Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Volga.
His parents; his wife, Marie; a son, Bernard Mihm Jr.; five brothers, Henry, George W., Joe, seminarian George H., and Charles; four sisters, Sr. Mary Beata O.S.F., Lena Langreck, Sr. Mary Clement O.S.F., and Barbara Kauten; and two granddaughters, preceded him in death.
Ben is survived by two sons, George (Dorothy) Mihm, Sherrill, and Virgil Mihm, Dubuque; two daughters, Clementine (Eldon) Walz, Strawberry Point, and Rosemary (Robert) Cook, Holy Cross; 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
