**THE JROTC MISSION**
To Motivate Young People To Be Better Citizens
Junior ROTC: Hollywood High School's JROTC program, which has
over 300 cadets, was started in 1917, making it one of the oldest
in the United States. JROTC is not a recruitment program for the
military. JROTC is a course given during regular school hours but
it includes many out-of-classroom activities. The curriculum covers
basics in history, government, technology awareness, citizenship,
and current events. Cadets also learn leadership skills,
self-discipline, confidence, and responsibility. JROTC sponsors
many activities for the cadets, to include a color guard,
drill teams, and a rifle team, and the program supports many
activities which benefit both school and community.
The JROTC program - which can be taken for up to four years for
credit - is the single most comprehensive course in high school.
It teaches a broad spectrum of subjects such as American history,
US government , US Constitution, technology awarenness, and
current events. Most students get involved in extracurricular
activities like Drill Team, Color Guard, and Land Navigation.
Many enjoy a stay at Summer Camp, where they play team sports,
train in confidence courses, and learn useful skills. Perhaps the
most unusual part of the JROTC program is the broad range of
instruction. Students are trained in personal skills that help
them study effectively, test well, develop winning habits, overcome
fears of failure, and set goals for themselves. They are also
trained in leadership skills that help them motivate others, make
decisions, plan and organize, speak and write effectively, work as
a member of a team, and problem solve.
The results are higher levels of success for grades and
graduation. When they enter college or the working world, they
have a distinct advantage over other applicants. Employers know
they are getting a person with strong motivation. Colleges know
they are getting a good citizen who's eager to work hard.
