Note: From Carol Davis report
"As far back as I (Nettie Herrin Napier) can remember hearing my father speak of Grandmother Herrin. Herrin was then spelled Herring. Grandmother was a full blooded Indian. My father John Herrin did not know anything about his grandfather except that they had three sons, Sol, Shep, and Jess. Shep was my father's father. The family of the other two, Sol and Jess, I know very little about. Shep married Zilphia Lucretia Byrd and they had two sons, John and Sam, who were born before the Civil War. My father, John Herrin, was born October 5, 1854, and his brother, Sam was born July 15, 1862. Then their father, Shep was called off to war at the battle of Vicksburg and he never knew any more about his father.
I saw a gourd of which he kept his gun powder which was shaped very odd. He poured the powder out of the gourd in his musket to shoot. He had his way to load it.
John Herrin decided he would be real man and was married in February 2, 1876, to Bettie Aultman. Bettie's father Tom Aultman was the son of a old pioneer settler, Grancer Aultman and granny. Grancer Aultman and granny had three sons, Tom, Jim and Cullen. I remember seeing my grandpa, Tom, as we called him, Rim. He had a beard all over his face. Never shaved just kept it trimmed. Tom Aultman married four times which they all died and left him except the last one, put him away. His second wife was Ann Bennet which was my grandma and they had two girls and three boys. And one of her daughters, Bettie Aultman, came to be my mother."

Note: From Carol Davis' report (spelling of name Minnie Lou Vena Herrin)
"As far back as Minnie Herrin Mooney can remember of hearing of Sheppard (Shep) Herrin been very sick before he was took off to war at the Battle of Vicksburg. She remember Gramom Zilphia begging them not to take him off so sick. Grandpop Shep was never heard of again. When he died either of sickness or killed in action at that battle, his small belonging was send to Grandma Zilphia. I never learned what was sent to Grandmom, but I wished I had.
Travis Herrin remember that his father Sam Herrin telling him that Sheppard (Shep) Herrin died in service in the Confederate Army and that he was buried in Lauderdale near Meridian, MS. That Shep's grave does not have a marker, so it would be impossible to locate his grave. Travis have not located the cemetary that Shep was buried."
From Vince Herrin, correct spelling is Minnie Louvena Herrin (4/28/2000)
