Note: According to Vera Cothern (Laura Beard's granddaughter) through Ann Galloway Gill: Captain O'Brien was a slave trader, importing slaves into Louisiana and killed a slave who he was importing, and that is why he changed him name from James to John or vice versa. No verification of this story

From Ann, John O'Brien was given a Spanish Land Grant for land where the Shell Refinery sits today. According to family research, the mineral rights were retained, but the land was lost due to unpaid taxes after the large house burned down. Rumors are that the house was a house of ill-repute. The land was acquired by the Perez family of Belle Chase, Louisiana. The last registered ownership (according to a family lawsuit still pending) was to the O'Brien family. Shell Oil Co. has a receipt for purchase of the property from the Perez family.
