Article from "The Enterprise", Sunday, November 20, 1921 (Orange, TX)

SHERIFF HELTON KILLS RENEGADE SHOW ANIMAL, ORANGE, TEXAS, NOVEMBER 19, 1921

The rogue elephant from Sells-Floto Circus became angered after the last show and went on a fifteen hour tour of mischief. A hunting party was organized with Sheriff Helton leading the way. At about 7 a.m. the elephant was seen at the intersecting railroad tracks. Sheriff Helton and the hunting party converged. After a volley of gunfire, the elephant became even more outrage. He grabbed a telephone pole from the ground and started after the attackers. Johnnis Ratcliff was mounted upon his horse and distracted the elephant long enough for the attackers to make a retreat. Sheriff Helton mounted a Detroit Chariot and pursued the renegade, laying down the final blow for this huge animal that was running rampant.

As described in The Enterprise, this was something to be remembered in this vicinity for a long time.

(Article was sent to Jack Helton by Marjorie Helton after the death of John William Helton, son of Sheriff Helton).

A similar article ran in the "Beaumont Enterprise" on Sunday, November 20, 1921 (available at the Beaumont TX Public Library). According to this article, Sheriff Helton received one of the animal's tusks.

Additional notes from Sammye Baker:
As a young man, everyone called him Jack. My mother remembered folks in Pollard, AL, calling him "Mr. Jack" when they made their annual visits.
He was a good business man and a newspaper article from the Houston paper describes him as leading the way for independent oilmen in the state of Texas. His oil company was named The Ranger Oil Co. and was located on Milby Street in Houston, TX.
He sponsored a baseball team with members of his truck drivers and workers as players. There was also a pool table in the basement of his home on Milby St. where the employees were always welcome. It was well used.
His children and grandchildren called him "Dad". He liked to fish and enjoyed his bay home, being a gentleman farmer. Ten acres were under cultivation. He had fruit trees and polinating a cross between an orange and grapefruit tree was a project he was always involved with. Watermelons, cantaloupe, vegetables were also grown, along with plum and peach trees. He kept a couple who lived on the place to help with the work. There were always boats at the end of the pier. They were taken out for storms or moved to the Yacht Club for protection from hurricanes.
