Note: [from "The Hetherington & Broughton Families", pg. 13] Mrs. E.L. Rikard, a daughther of Laura Broughton Wiggins, Charles R. Broughton migrated to Monroe County from Green County, Georgia, with his family, which consisted of his father, a brother, and a sister. There is no mention of a mother, so it is assumed she died prior to the move to Monroe County, which probably occurred in the 1830's. His father, Nathaniel Broughton, bought a home in the community known as the Ridge, about 6 miles north of Monroeville. His brother went to Mobile to live, and married a woman from Mobile. The sister married a man named Brown, who lived on the Ridge.
"... As the years went by, he acquired more and more land until he was the largest land holder in the county. He owned a good many slaves. He had a cotton gin drawn by horses, and a grist or water mill. He tanned leather and made shoes. He raised sheep, cows, horses, and hogs. He had looms to spin and weave cloth, and both cotton and woolen cloth were woven. He made molasses and sugar, and kept bees so the family had honey."
"Charles R. Broughton was a Mason, receiving all degrees in Alabama Lodge No. 3: entered apprentice, 22 Nov 1850; fellowcraft, 14 Dec 1850; Master Mason 11 Jan 1851. He demitted from Lodge No. 3 30 Jun 1851 and affiliated with Monroeville Lodge No. 153 on 9 Feb 1852 as a charter member. He was the first tiler of this lodge and served as tiler until 1872 at which time he was elected treasurer. He served as treasurer until Jun 1884. He demitted on 9 Jul 1887 because he was longer able to attend lodge."
"...the family was pretty well broken financially by the War."
