Note: [From Phillip Sherrod gedcom]: "A Partial Genealogy of John Godbold of South Carolina" - John Godbold was a native of County Suffolk or Kent, England and spent long years as a sailor in the service of his country. In 1735, at the age of seventy-one, he retired from the sea, came to America and settled near Mars Bluff in the northeastern part of South Carolina. There he married Elizabeth McGurney and his five children were born. In 1759, he sold this grant of land and received another grant from George III, King of England, of 400 acres between the Pee Dee and the Little Pee Dee Rivers in what later became Prince Georges Parish of Georgetown District, South Carolina. Still later, the name was changed to Marion Co and Marion District. About a half mile south of the present city of Marion is where John built his new home. He was one of the first settlers in this area. John was energetic and despite his advanced age soon became the owner of much property. He had saved a trunk of guineas from his toil on the sea. Ere long he owned 30 negroes. The French & Indian Wars brought the loss of some of his property; 22 slaves were taken and his trunk of money rifled. John and Elizabeth Godbold had 3 sons, John, James and Thomas, and 2 daughters, Elizabeth and Annie (or Anne). The sons married and settled around Marion, but we were unable to learn what became of the girls. Most of the Godbolds in the United States today have descended from this early family. There was another John Godbold, a sailor from England, born 1735 who settles in Charlestown, MA, much later in the century. We found no relationship between the two families. A few of those descendants are living today in the northern and farm western states. John Godbold was a member of the Established Church of England, out of which grew the Methodist Church to which many of his descendants belong. He died in 1765 at the age of 101."

[From Phillip Sherrod gedcom] Served in the East Indian service of the British Navy prior to 1735. He came to Barbados, West Indies about 1735, then to South Carolina where he married Elizabeth McGurney. He received a land grant in 1742 of 250 acres in Mars Bluff Settlement. Later he sold this land and moved to Bitton's Neck Community. On 2 Aug 1759 he received a grant of 300 acres on Cat Fish Creek, Craven Co SC. Later this son went to his son Thomas.

John Godbold was the first who came to the region of Marion Court House. Bishop Gregg,
p. 68, says: "He was an Englishman, and had been long a sailor in the British service. Though
advanced in years at the time of his arrival, such was his enterprising energy that he
succeeded in accumulating what for that day was a large property. He settled in 1735, about
a half-mile below the site of the present village of Marion, being the first adventurer to that
locality." "During the French and Indian wars, Mr. Godbold was plundered of almost all the
personal property he had gathered. Of thirty negroes, twenty-two were taken from him and
never recovered; a trunk of guineas, the fruits of many years' labor, was rifled. He married,
after his arrival on Pee Dee, Elizabeth McGurney, by whom he had three sons, John, James
and Thomas, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Anne.
--A History of Marion County, W.W. Sellers (1902)

[from Charlotte Wooten Holly] per descendant Kate Lilly Blue, John Godbold came from Charles Towne (Charleston) in company of colonists who came from England on the ship "Susan Marlow"; Charlotte can find no documentation from this ship

[from Charlotte Wooten Holly] per English researcher, Maurice Godbold, in Kew Public Record Office, records John Godball as master of armed merchantman "Pompey" that left Barbados for an undisclosed destination at the right time to have arrived in South Carolina in 1735.

[from Charlotte Wooten Holly] 27 October 1736, John Godbold entered into records in South Carolina the brand by which his cattle would be marked "two upper ceals (seals) and two under half pence". He received his first grant of land in Carolinas on 27 March 1742 along Withlachochee Creek.

Is this the same Elizabeth? The ages of children in the household and the oldest female in the household make it unlikely, given the age of Mourning Elizabeth Baker Godbold's children

Note: Date of death is from Freda Noble - although this seems odd, since it is the same date of death as her husband Stephen T Godbold? Also, all their children's dates of birth (as Freda lists them) are late in Rebecca's life or after her death so this area needs more investigation
