Congressional Sessions

Each term of Congress starts on January 3 of odd numbered years and lasts for two years.  Each term of the Congress is divided into two sessions, or meetings.  A session lasts one year and includes breaks for holidays and vacations.  Because of an ever-increasing workload, today a session of Congress often lasts from January until November or December.

Congress remains in session until its members vote to adjourn.  Neither the House nor the Senate may adjourn for more than three days without the approval of the other house.  If Congress is adjourned, the President may call it back for a special session.
