The Chosen by Chaim Potok

The Chosen is a difficult book to get through. At least, it was for me. But at the end, it proved to be a valuable experience. Several intriguing issues were adressed in the book, and it made me think. Anyway, The Chosen is a story about two *unlikely* friends - Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders. They meet each other in (of all places) a baseball game, because Danny Saunders unintentionally causes injury to Reuven. Although very different, they become close. One major difference between the two very intelligent young men is that Reuven is an Orthodox Jew, while Danny is a Hasidic Jew. Throughout the story, which takes place in Brooklyn in the late 1930's-early 1940's, they together fight to be friends-and through it all they learn about family, faith, and the power of love. A highly interesting read, if a bit difficult, The Chosen should be on your summer reading list!
