Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Margaret Peterson Haddix cleverly portrays the story of Cinderella in a different light with her novel Just Ella. In this story, Ella doesn't have a fairy godmother. She got to the ball by her own determination. But now that she's won the prince's heart, she realizes that the life of royalty is not what it seems. For her, it's downright boring and difficult to do needlepoint all day and learn etiquette from her strict instructor, Madame Bisset. And, of course, there's the ever-creeping suspicion that behind the beautiful face of Prince Charming lies a vacant soul. When Ella decides not to marry Charming, she finds herself in a situation where he needs to take hold of her own destiny-again.

Overall, Just Ella is a wonderful re-telling of an old favorite.
