Good Night, Mr. Tom is a superb historical novel set in World War II. It is the story of Willie Beech, a young boy who is evacuated from London to live in Little Weirwold, with Mr. Thomas Oakley, a complete stranger. Mr. Tom is kind to Willie, even though he is not used to children. Through Mr. Tom's love and care, Willie fights to leave behind the hate and despair of his past, when his mother asks him to come back home to London. Time passes, and Mr. Tom becomes worried when Willie does not send word of how he is doing. So he sets out to discover what has become of the boy he has come to love as a son. This book is highly interesting, although the scenes of child abuse and neglect are strong and are not suitable for all ages. This is a very enjoyable book, and has won numerous awards.
