Someone once described the book as "sexist, racist, overblown, and melodramatic. It's also pretty darned brilliant." That description is entirely accurate. Sometimes the book is only remembered for the epic motion picture and "Frankly...I don't give a damn." But, it is truly more than that. It is a very compelling and entertaining novel, a sweeping tale of tangled passions involving many strong characters: Ashley Wilkes, Melanie(Hamilton)Wilkes, Rhett Butler, and, most important of all, Scarlett O'Hara. The story takes place in Georgia during the Civil War, and shows the attitudes and lifestyles of the South at the time, so that would explain the sexism and racism. The part about it being overblown and melodramatic? Well, it is a romance story, okay? Yet, it is so much more than that. It is one of the finest books ever written. I highly recommend it. Read it!
