Follow the River by James Alexander Thom

This book chronicles into the true story of Mary Draper Ingles. She was twenty-three, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when her life was shattered by a Shawnee raid on her settlement. Leaving behind a bloody massacre, the Shawnee kidnapped her, her two children (well, her three if you count the unborn one), and her sister. Desperately wanting her freedom, Mary escaped from her captors and managed to walk 1,000 miles on foot with only the clothes on her back and the Ohio River as her guide home. Although gruesome and brutal at times (not a child's book!), it is a well-written and captivating read.
