CALIFORNIA CONDOR
The largest flying bird in North America, adult condors have a wing span of up to 9.5 feet and weigh 17-24 pounds. The condor only feeds on animals that are already dead. The total condor population is currently around 160. Condors could once be found over much of North America but now are only found in southern California and northern Mexico. There demise has come from excessive shooting, lead poinsioning, and other causes from humans. In the early 1980's only 22 condors remained in the wild and captivity. Through breeding and release programs the numbers are slowly climbing.
