THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM “I’ll call an ambulance!” Chrysy said, starting to run off. “It’s too late. She’s...she is...already dead...” Jason said, wiping the tears from his eyes. He hugged her softly, then ran from the room before anyone could catch him. Chrysy, Adam, Crush, Indiana, and Jordan watched in disbelief. Cecelia had left them so suddenly. “Oh no, this is horrible!” Indiana cried, throwing herself into Jordan’s arms. He grunted. “It’s not that bad. People die every day, you know.” He said to her, putting his hands on her back. He felt awkward. “But don’t you see?” Indiana said, backing up and staring at him. She glanced at Cecelia, lying on the floor surrounded by mourning friends. “They were in love.” The next day, Indiana sat on the couch waiting for Jordan to watch a movie with her. Crush came in with a mug of hot cocoa. “Hey Indy!” she smiled. “Oh Crush...um, hi!” Indiana said, trying to smile innocently. Jordan came in with a big bowl of popcorn. “Okay, I got the popcorn!” He said, and sat down next to Indiana, staring at Crush, willing her to leave. “Oh. I see how it is.” Crush said, sipping her cocoa. “Bye then.” She turned on her heel and left. “Oh, Crush...” Indiana called after her, but Jordan took her hands. “Don’t worry about her now!” He instructed. Indiana blushed, but removed her hand from his. “I’m sorry. I have to. She’s my best friend.” She smiled at Jordan, then went into the kitchen, where Crush was rooting through the refrigerator. “Crush...I...” she started, but Crush moved in to hug her before she finished. Three days later, Indiana stood with her hands clasped behind her back, sweating like a pig underneath her black baseball cap. “And so, I was thinkin maybe...you know, we could uh...do something today? Just, um, us.” Indiana said, smiling up hopefully at Jordan. “Yeah sure.” Jordan replied. “Indiana!” Crush said. Indiana looked down. She knew that Crush disapproved of her relationship with Jordan. But Crush broke into a smile and gave her thumbs up. “Go for it!” Watching from the kitchen, Raven talked to her twin sister. “So Mel-Mel. I know you know what’s going on. So tell me. What’s up with Indy and Jordan?” “Isn’t it obvious? They are like the next Romeo and Juliet! It’s so cute! I don’t think Jordan even realizes he’s falling in love!” laughed Mel-Mel. “Well Jordan has never loved anything. That’s expectable.” Raven said, sitting down. “But I do think he is falling in love with Indy.” “WHAT?” Kaylan hissed to herself, hiding behind a kitchen cabinet and listening in on the conversation. |
