Chris Spencer, who was sent to New Jersey
Monday, June 1, 1998, isn't happy to be
leaving.
  Chris Spencer knows professional football
is a business, but that didn't keep him from
blowing off some steam Tuesday about being
traded to New Jersey.

"I'm the guy he is using to get his ass out of a jam," the popular Iowa Barnstormers wide receiver-linebacker said, rererring to Coach John Gregory.  "This should have never happened, but now that it has, I have to make the best of it."

Spencer, 27, was traded Monday by Gregory for Aaron Garcia, the Red Dogs' starting quarterback.  New Jersey will receive an additional player at a later date.

Garcia, ranked fourth among the league's quarterbacks this week, arrived in Des Moines on Monday night and practiced with the team Tuesday.

In announcing the trade, Gregory said he regretted giving up Spencer, but Garcia, a four-year veteran, is a quarterback capable of bringing consistency to the Iowa offense, which now ranks last in scoring.

"Aaron is a veteran quarterback who has been one of the top-rated quarterbacks in the league this season," said Gregory, adding Garcia will start Saturday against the Grand Rapids Rampage.  "It cost us a quality player, but that's what you have to give up these days to get a quality quarterback."

Gregory also said New Jersey would not have made the deal without getting Spencer in return.  "We tried a number of different players, but it always came back to Chris," he said.

Of Spencer's comments, Gregory said he couldn't dispute his former player.

"Chris Spencer has always been one of my favorite players.  In a lot of ways, what he says about the trade is true," Gregory said.

Garcia, 6-foot, 1-inch, 195 pounds, completed 65 percent of his passes this season for 1,158 yards and 18 touchdowns.  He also has thrown five interceptions.

"It's my job to come here, throw good passes and help win games," Garcia said, adding he was glad to be with Iowa despite the Barnstormers' 0-5 record.

"I know they gave up a good player to get me, so I just have to make sure I do my job," Garcia said.

Spencer said he feels no bitterness toward the Barnstormers front office or the team's fans.

"Don't get me wrong, the front office has been very good to me," Spencer, a Marshalltown native who attended Iowa State, said.  "I also thought our fans were great to me.  That's what makes this so tough."

But, the usually soft-spoken Spencer was direct in his criticism of Gregory and the rest of the Iowa coaching staff.
"He should have brought a lot more than just three quarterbacks in here, but he thought he had found his guy," Spencer said, referring to former quarterback Kenny Nord, who now plays wide receiver-linebacker.
Spencer also said he wasn't surprised he was traded now that Nord plays his position.  "They are going to find that guy a place to play.  That's pretty clear," Spencer said.
Of the rest of the coaching staff, Spencer said he believes Gregory isn't getting told what he needs to hear.  "There isn't a whole lot of courage among any of them," Spencer said.
Carlos James, a veteran Barnstormer, said many of Iowa's players were shocked to learn of Spencer's departure.  "All I know is that if you trade away a cornerstone of your team, you had better get someone damn good to take his place," James said.
James said he believes Garcia can rejuvenate Iowa's struggling offense, but he and the rest of the team want to see some results.
"You don't like to put that kind of pressure on a guy, but that's the situation here.  We've given up an awful lot to get him," James said.
Spencer, who has been on the injured reserve list after breaking a rib two weeks ago, said he would report to New Jersey on Thursday.  He also said he expects to play for the Red Dogs in their game against Orlando on Monday night.
