In 1888 a small group of Blacks began holding worship services in their homes, then in a building on West Church Street, the site of Elim Lutheran.  In 1890 when they secured a lot at 516 Bromley, they bought and moved a small building which had been a paint shop.  By 1896 the newly renovated structure officially became the Second baptist Church of Marshalltown.

The 18 charter members included Mr. & Mrs. G.R.Warren, Mr. & mrs. C.P. Gilmore, Mr. & Mrs. L.H. Johnson, Mr. & Mrs. Manuel Jackson, Mr. & Mrs. Elzy Jones, Mr. & Mrs. Abe Bryant, Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Johnson, Mrs. Eliza Cotoms, Mrs. Carrie Suter and Mrs. Mary Sellers.  Some descendants of founding members are still active in the church:  Mrs. Frank (Helen) Johnson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Warren and granddaughter of Carrie Suter; Frank Johnson, grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Johnson; Mary and Wayne Bannon and daughter Judy, grandchildren of Mr. & Mrs. Jones.  Reverend Mark Smith of Cedar Falls serves as pastor.

Twenty members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South who had migrated from Green County, Alabama to Marshalltown, Iowa, formed the Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church on December 12, 1917.  Mr. Ebra Morrow, who was a charter member and instrumental in the original arrangements, was killed in a railroad accident soon after the founding, so the church took his name to honor him.  The church is selfsupporting and has build a parsonage.  The building was purchased from the Congregational Church in 1919 for $3000.

Descendants of charter members still active include Vernon and James Brown, sons of Mr. & Mrs. Joe brown, and their granddaughter, Mrs. Claude Wilkins, and Mrs. Erma Morrow, widow of Samuel Morrow.

Cumberland Pesbyterian Church in Marshalltown is a branch of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the United States and Liberia, Africa.  It was organized in 1924 by former members of Alabama churches who migrated to Marshalltown after the Civil War.

W.H. Gails was the first pastor.  Reverend Artice Maxwell served for the next 30 years and is presently retired.  Reverend L.W. Seth of Toledo is the current pastor.  The building was once the Friends Church at Third Street and Main.  Descendants of early members still active include Reverend Artice Maxwell, son of founder Henry Maxwell, Mrs. John Spencer and Mrs. Bessie Spencer, an early member and elder of the church.
