Italian Carriers

The Marina Militare only attempted one aircraft carrier during World War II in which the conversion was even started. There were a few planned conversions, but many were decided against with the outbreak of World War II. The one project attempted was the Aquila. Although never finished, the Aquila was close to completion at the Italian capitulation in September 1943. The ship was again raised in 1946 in expectation of possibly continuing construction and placing the carrier into service, although this was decided against and the ship was eventually simply scrapped.
