"Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto
the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the
holy scriptures,)"
What this doesn't mean:
It doesn't mean nor imply:
That the true prophets ever wrote unholy scriptures.
That God is supportive of any prophets in any unholy scriptures.
That God MUST issue a promise before He can perform any act that
is holy, or just, or good.
That God recommends the perusal of any unholy scriptures.
But,
What this does mean:
It means or implies:
That God doesn't break His word, regardless of any verbal testimony to
the contrary.
That in many important particulars, God gives sufficient advance
warning before fulfilling any of His promises. (This is understood by the
word "prophet" being plural.)
That there are unholy scriptures.
That God's promises are to be looked for only in the holy scriptures.
That God promised good tidings to man several times, by several holy
men, before making the promised good a reality.
That several of the Old Testament writers were prophets.
That these same men wrote about "the gospel of God."
That the Old Testament is God's word.
That the Old Testament contains promises of God to man about the
gospel.
