One of Williams cousins said he loved to play with William even if William was older. One of the games they played when they were small goes something like this. Uncle Tom and Aunt Zada were having William help build a new chicken house. Will we all showed up to play. Where a window was going to be looked like a good target to throw rocks at. William would pop his head out and we would throw the rocks. Willard, Paul, and many others Threw for along time. Finally William had just ducked from one of the rocks I threw with all my might. Willard timed it by counting to three and away went the rock. William popped his head up to meet the rock. Bam right between the eyes. It knocked him out cold. Uncle Tom came running out of the house yelling, "Now I hope you boy's are happy you have finally killed him!" I had never seen Uncle Tom so upset in my hole life as he was that day. We ran home about 5 miles, scared to death that Willard had really killed William.

May 27, 1952 Joplin Globe

Mrs. Ada Shull Sufering from internal injuries, 3 killed in plunge into ravine.

Attendants at St. John's hospital last night described as 'improved' the condition of Mrs. Ada Shull of Elgin, Kan. one of two persons seriously injured early Sunday in a vicious motor car crash which claimed the lives of three persons on highway 166 six miles southwest of Joplin.

Another seriously injured occupant of the car was Henry A. Shull 43, years old, husband and brother of two of the dead, was removed by ambulance Sunday night to a hospital at Sedan, Kan. his home. He suffered fractures of both legs and other injuries.

Killed in the acicdent. which saw the motor car containing 7 persons bound for a visit with relatives at Champion, MO. plunge 200 feet into a ravine off a sharp curve on highway 166 just west of the Missouri-Kansas state line.

Mrs. Pearlena Belle Shull, 40 year old of Sedan, Kan. mother of eight children whose dying concern was for the safety of her 10 month old baby.

William M. Shull, 37, an oil worker of Elgin, Kan. driver of the car and brother-in-law of Mrs. Pearlena Shull.

Joyce Faye Butts 6, stepdaughter of William M. Shull and daughter of his wife Ada Shull.

Others injured all of whom were brought to St. John's hospital here in a Wene ambulance from Baxter Springs were:Shirley Shull 11, and Larry Wayne Shull 10 months, children of Henry and Pearlena Shull The two children were thrown from the car as it over-ended and rolled down the hillside and escaped with minor injuries. They were treated at St. John's hospital and dismissed.

Little Shirley was the hero of the highway tragedy. Picking up her baby brother she climbed the steep embankment to the highway and stopped a passing car occupied by Dean Slater and Helen Spear of Wichita, Kan. and Slater drove to Baxter Springs, Galena and Joplin police the Kansas highway patrol and a Wene ambulance went to the scene.

They found two dead and one dying and two injured in the car which had landed broadside aginst a large tree with such force as to almost wrap the car around the tree trunk.

It required almost an hour to free Mrs. Pearlena Shull who remained conscious and cried out in fear for the safety of her baby. Told that the child was safe she died peacefully a few minutes after she was extricated.

Dr. Harry Bogan of Baxter Springs on his way to Joplin to attend a patient, stopped and administered first aid to the injured. He worked over Mrs Pearlena Shull administering a hypodermic to help ease her pain while officers labored to free her from the twisted metal.

The 7 were headed east on highway 166 to visit with Mr. and Mrs. John Shull parents of the Shull brothers, and Mrs. Ada Shull parents Tom and Sada Coonts all of Douglas County, near Champion, Missouri.

Tropper Keith Collier of the Kansas highway patrol said tire marks on the road shoulder indicated the driver had fought desperately for some 300 feet to keep the car from plunging into the ravine.

Then the car left the road and plowed through thick underbrush bounded over large boulders as it plunged down the steep and rugged hillside and hit the tree. Resuers had no difficulty removing the dead and injured except Mrs. Pearlena Shull. She was pronouced dead upon reaching the hospital, but ambulance attendants said she apparently died before she left the scene of the disaster. Her boby was badly crushed.

The bodies of William H. Shull and Joyce Fay Butts were removed to the Wene funeral home and last night were taken to the Barker funeral home at Mountain Grove, Missouri to await funeral plans.

The body of Mrs Pearlena Shull was taken to Sedan Sunday night. Besides her two children in the car with her at the time of the accident, her other children are Dean and Jack Shull, both in the miltary service, and Roy, Patricia, Nora May and Virgil Shull all of the home.
