In my second week of classes at Fort Hare, things started to get interesting. I had been hearing about the possibility of the students toyi-toying, but I wasn't sure why or even what exactly that was. This is what I wrote at the time as things were unfolding... | |
The University has had a problem with students accruing debt over the
course of their studies, and now is about R$25 million behind. I am not
sure if that's their budget deficit, or the amount that students owe the
University. Either way the University implemented a new policy this year
that students cannot register unless they pay all their outstanding fees
and 50% of their fees for the first semester this year. When you look
at what that means, as much as R$10,000 for some students, its an impossibility
for some of these students to be able to pay and register, so trouble
has been brewing. |

Many students were quite upset about this, many feel there should be some level of national funding for education, some have spent the money their parents gave them on other things, some just plain don't have the kind of money to be able to pay until they get their degree and start earning an income. There is no such thing as Federal Stafford loans here. Some people are sponsored, but many are not. |
