This is a picture I took before eating with my Senegalese freinds in Alice. I met them through my brother Hussam, here on the right hand side of the photo. It was so profound to me how every night, one of them would hook up the food and everyone would gather around together to eat from the same large dish. I was familiar with this from eating with my Ethiopian freinds, but to do so in the states it is outside the common or expected flow of things. In South Afrika, it was just part of the everyday social intimacy of people.
This is a picture of an initiation hut, where Xhosa boys go to be circumsized around the age of 20. Once they spend their time in the hills, they return as men, with all the responsibilites that that entails. There's a whole lot more to all of this, but it is not really suppossed to be public knowledge. Young men tended to be very wary of who was around when speaking about such things, for fear of divulging too much to a woman or uninitiated boy.
