A shot of one of the main streets in Alice, South Afrika. To the left was the taxi "rank" shown below, to the right was another group of people who were waiting for the bus. Down the street beyond the yellow billboard is a shebeen (pub/bar) and a butcher's shop.
This is the main taxi "rank" in Alice where you catch transport to other parts of the Province. The "combie" on the right is in the line going to "King" (King William's Town.) The center two taxis go to the townships outside Port Elizabeth. To the far left are the taxis to Grahamstown. If you wanted to go some place, you had to first roam around until you found the right row of taxis lined up to go where you wanted to go, then get in and wait until the taxi got full. Once you were on the road, you'd pass your money forward to pay for the fee.
This is a shot of a few students from the school hanging out at the local shebeen "The Amatola." We would walk into town, play pool, watch football and relax. In this photo, there's people from South Afrika, Botswana, Zambia, England and of course United States.
