Katie Holmes & Gary Cole In Spider-Man? Spider-Man Hype

Will we see Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man movie afterall!? And is Sam sticking with one of his favorite actors for the role of JJJ? We received the following this morning, which may turn out to be huge news. Apparently there was some talking going on while Sam was in post-production for his upcoming The Gift. The scooper, going by the name of 'Frankie', fills us in on the possible casting of Gary Cole, Katie Holmes, and some cameos we can expect:

...I wanted to float something your way and mind you it was just some talk floating around Sam's office. I worked in some capacity on the post-production of The Gift and two of the actors involved with that film were apparently approached by Sam to be in the Spider-Man film. First, Gary Cole who always works with Sam was someone he wanted to play Jameson the newspaper guy. Cole's a good actor and a cool guy and if you ever saw Office Space you know he could pull off the arrogant and annoying Jameson. I think Sam wanted to get William Macy from Fargo, but Macy is so in demand that it wasn't working out.

Another maybe more interesting thing was about Katie Holmes. Sam had asked her one day if she'd ever be a blonde for a film and she said sure, "kinda a reverse Sarah Gellar thing" referring to Cruel Intentions. Sam said there was a part in Spider-Man that was perfect for Katie, which was the role of Gwen Stacy. Apparently she's in the script in a small capacity to be used in a sequel---i guess there's all kinds of cameos, Sam has that wierd sense of linear stories and he's pretty funny about that kind of stuff. I'm not sure if he got Katie involved or not, the role was real small, but from what I heard she was really up for it. She became good friends with Maguire on the set of Wonder Boys and wanted to work with him again.

Willem Dafoe Green With Envy? Spider-Man Crawlspace

AICN is reporting that the latest rumored casting of the Green Goblin in the Spider-Man movie is actor Willem Dafoe. Dafoe has starred in movies like The Last Temptation of Christ and Clear and Present Danger. John Malkovitch seems to have passed on the role, but stay tuned for further updates.

More On 'Macho Man' Randy Savage Spider-Man Hype

Rumors are going wild on the web that Savage will play 'Crusher Hogan' in the Spider-Man movie. Live Audio Wrestling reports that 'Macho Man' Randy Savage has been mysteriously missing from the wrestling landscape for the last few months, and is scheduled to portray a wrestler with the tentative name of 'Crusher.' Crusher Hogan was the first person Spider-Man fought in a wrestling ring. Although no stranger to acting, Savage has portrayed a wrestler before in the Ready to Rumble movie and he also provided the voice for an intergalactic space wrestler named "Wrasslor" on the Cartoon Network series Dexter’s Laboratory. We are trying to confirm this as we speak, so stay tuned! Thanks to 'SpiderX' for the heads up.

Alicia Witt Can't Talk Spider-Man? Spider-Man Hype

You know there's something up when an actor or actress flat out refuses to talk about a project. 'Juhlz' gives us the scoop today on what Alicia Witt's reaction was to her possible involvement in the Spider-Man movie. We know she has auditioned for the role of Mary Jane and that Sam liked what he saw, but is there more to it? You decide...

Alicia Witt was at a local radio station this morning and the subject of Spider-Man came up and she was real tentative and could not confirm nor deny she was going to play the part of Mary Jane.

Raimi Comments On Witt & Spidey's Costume Spider-Man Hype

While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Spider-Man director Sam Raimi commented on the frequent rumors that Alicia Witt was going to play Mary Jane Watson in the film. He told the magazine that even though he was certainly impressed by the actress, "there are still other actresses I have left to interview." In addition, Raimi is talking about the webslinger's costume in the film, warning, "I can't say [it] will be what the kids have seen in comic books."

Jeff Habberstad To Do Spider-Man Stunts!-UPDATED! Spider-Man Hype

Well, it appears that the info received by both the IMDB and us was inaccurate regarding the Spider-Man stunt-coordinator. Shortly after we posted the bit this morning about Dominique Vandenburg doing stunts for the film we received this e-mail from an anonymous source close to the production:

I just read the lastest news about Dominique Vandenberg, and I have to tell you that it is not correct. He will not be the stunt coordinator for the movie, and I'm not even sure he is gong to be one of the Stunt Doubles. Jeff Haberstad is the stunt-Coordinator, and he has selected four stunt doubles for Tobey Maguire. None of which include Dominique.

Sounds cool, because Haberstad has worked on such high-profile projects as Blade, Men in Black, Face/Off, Broken Arrow, and The Mask of Zorro. You can check out his filmography here. We should have more information soon, so stay tuned!

UPDATE: There's also been recent speculation about whether only a CGI Spider-Man would be used when he's wearing the suit or if it would be an actual person/stunt-double in the suit. Our source says that he's pretty sure the movie will feature both! Some parts will require Spider-Man to be created in CGI (presumably when he's swinging through Manhattan) and for the close-up stunts the four stunt-doubles will be used.

Just Found This One, Dated 8/14/00 The Film Hobbit

The Film Hobbit reported on August 14 that Brian Dennehy has already been confirmed as Uncle Ben. This was first mentioned as a possibility by the Corona web site, as a rumor, on August 13. I haven't heard anything more about Brian Dennehy being cast yet.

Also new, according to Avi Arad of Marvel Entertainment, Doc Ock is also totally out of the script. There is supposedly a possibility the good doctor will be in either the second or third installment. Sorry fans!

In Regards To Bruce Campbell and SPIDER-MAN...AICN

Since the very moment that Sam Raimi came on board SPIDER-MAN, the Bruce Campbell for Aunt May, Bruce Campbell for The Lizard, Bruce Campbell for Spidey, Bruce Campbell for Doc Ock, Bruce Campbell for Green Goblin... and on and on and on began to surface.

Most recently, Dark Horizons mentioned the rumor that Bruce would have a cameo as a character that we comic fans would know would evolve into a villain in a future film. Sort of like the original plan for Billy Dee Williams in BATMAN.

But because we know the rabid enthusiasm for creative casting rumors concerning Bruce Campbell... I decided to run this by Bruce and see what I could find out. First off, he's still busy editing up his documentary which he says will be spit polished late this fall. As for the most recent SPIDER-MAN rumors? Here's what Bruce had to say on the matter... "With regard to Spidey, I'm hearing rumors too, even from pals, but I have heard no 'official' thing...stay tuned! " -- Bruce Campbell

OOOOO... KKKKKkkk....

This is not a denial, but rather an allusion that something is in the wind.... but nothing final at the moment. This will most likely cause many people frenzied attacks of hopeful anxiety till they hear the final yea or nay. But it sounds like it is at least... a possibility at this stage of the game....

John Malkovich Joins Spider-Man Cast? Spider-Man Hype.com

Just five days ago 4filmmakers - the folks who first confirmed Tobey Maguire was to play Spider-Man as well as the ones who broke the news about Hayden Christensen taking the role of Anakin - added Kate Hudson to the castlist of Spider-Man. In their latest update, John Malkovich joins Hudson and Maguire as a new castmember. This comes after The Hollywood Reporter reported that:

John Malkovich is weighing an offer to star as nemesis Green Goblin in Columbia Pictures' highly anticipated special effects tentpole for summer 2001 Spiderman, based on the Marvel Comics' superhero, sources said. Malkovich would star opposite Tobey Maguire, who takes the title role in the Sam Raimi-helmed feature to be produced by Laura Ziskin. Malkovich, who recently starred in Being John Malkovich for director Spike Jonze, also has starred in such films as the upcoming Shadow of the Vampire, The Sheltering Sky and Dangerous Liaisons. He is repped by WMA and his manager Gerry Harrington.

"John Malkovich mulls Green Goblin role" By Claude Brodesser/Reuters

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - John Malkovich is in negotiations to star as the Green Goblin in Sony and Marvel Entertainment's Spider-Man, the studio's big-screen adaptation of the classic comic book webslinger...

Insiders said Malkovich is likely to assume the dual role of the Goblin, who by night is the mortal nemesis of Spider-Man and by day is the next-door neighbor to the collegiate nice guy Peter Parker (who'll be played by Tobey Maguire.)

Hollywood Reporter Confirms Two AICN Scoops:..SPIDER-MAN AICN

Hey folks, Harry here with confirmations on two recent AICN scoops. Over at the Hollywood Reporter they are reporting that John Malkovich is currently considering an offer to play Norman Osborne/The Green Goblin. You might recall that we first brought this to you on 8-30-2000, where at the same time we said that the production also had an offer on the table to Kate Hudson (who you should check out in ALMOST FAMOUS this weekend) for the role of Mary Jane (though she'd be even better as Gwen Stacy with the Green Goblin as the villain...Now while the story says that Malkovich 'is weighing an offer', unless something catastrophic occurs... he will be playing this part. As for Kate Hudson... if you have been following the rumors, 4filmmakers.com has added her to their casting page on SPIDER-MAN. Meanwhile, there are all sorts of new casting rumors floating about including a rather cool one from Dark Horizons about Bruce Campbell having a POSSIBLE cameo that would set him up as a villain.... (I've currently got a letter out to Bruce to get the word of God on this)...

The Man In The Spider-Man Suit Will Be...Spider-Man Hype

According to an 'Anonymous' source, personal trainer and martial arts expert Dominique Vanderburg, who helped Leonardo DiCaprio buff up and learn the various knife-fighting moves for Martin Scorsese's upcoming Gangs of New York, will be training Tobey Maguire for the Spider-Man movie as well. Vanderburg will be helping Maguire add even more bulk to his already ripped frame, as well as instructing him in some basic martial arts moves. But the BIG news is that Vanderburg will also be playing the webslinger with his mask on, given his extensive martial arts background which is pretty much on the level of Ray Park's. Vanderburg has a small role in Gangs of New York and has worked for Tim Burton as well, but this is obviously a huge break for him. He is currently on location in Italy for the filming of Gangs, so unless the shoot runs long he should start training Tobey very hard for the role this October.

Bruce Campbell in Spider-Man? Spider-Man Hype

Today, Dark Horizons received word that Sam Raimi's good friend and fan favourite, Bruce Campbell, will make an appearance in the film in a role that would set him up as a villain for a sequel. Could this mean that there may be some truth to the rumor that Campbell will play Eddie Brock, also known as Venom? Now that the Venom property has been dropped by New Line and the right for the characters of Eddie Brock and Venom are up for grabs, this may very well turn out to be true. We will keep our ears to the ground.

I really honestly can't see Bruce Campbell as Venom/Eddie Brock. I can't see anyone portraying Venom, actually. If Bruce is going to join the cast, then get rid of Ted Raimi and have Bruce play Dr. Connors.

As I've said before, I think Venom would be better left to CGI instead of an actor in a black spider-venom suit. Sure, someone would have to portray Eddie and there would probably be some close ups of Eddie and the symbiote together that CGI wouldn't be the best for. I think someone like Howie Long, NFL commentator and Radio Shack shill, has the right look for Eddie anyway. And Bruce Campbell is so Dr. Connor. Ted Raimi looks too wishy-washy for that part. If Sam wants his brother in his movie, and there's nothing wrong with that, then Ted be...aw hell, I can't see Ted Raimi as any of the Spider-verse characters! Maybe Dr. Banner, from The Incredible Hulk, but that's along the same line of reasoning as me linking Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne: an unassuming, quiet, keep to himself kind of guy with one hell of a lurking secret!

Latest Doc Ock Casting Rumors Spider-Man Hype

The Spider-Man Hype web site received a news tip reporting that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the latest up for the role of Doctor Octopus. Hoffman movies include Boogie Nights and Patch Addams. The site is hesitant about the tipster credibility. The Corona web site is stating that the role of Doc Ock may be diminished, and more of a foreshadowing for a sequel. It seems that the Green Goblin is the main villain.

More On The Spider-Man Cameos

First up, a scooper for Coming Attractions says that the rumors that Doc Ock and Curt Connors may be bit players look to be correct, with foreshadowing of things to come. But Eddie 'Venom' Brock? Nope. During a certain point of the production, the idea of a reporter called 'Eddie Brock' was played with - and then discarded..."I don't see how a cameo for Eddie Brock is possible, New Line Cinema own the movie rights to Venom and Eddie Brock. Unless Sony works something out with New Line I don't see how this could."

Ock Casting and Big Name Cameos?

Corona's Coming Attractions received news coming out of the unconfirmed rumor mill, so don't get your hopes up just yet.

According to scooper known as 'Conrad Vig', who claims to have read the script, Doc Ock is still in the picture as a principal villain but in a smaller capacity than the first draft. Rumors also have Sam Raimi courting Phillip Seymour Hoffman for the role with Sony Pictures adding five million dollars for the catch. Hold on there's more, apparently Raimi who loves to foreshadow will be including Curt Connors, Eddie Brock, and Harry Osborne, with cameos from a few big name stars. Since we aren't familiar with this scooper's previous track, we can't give our full seal of approval at this time.

The scooper also tells Coming Attractions that the John Malkovich, as the Green Goblin rumors, are a reality.

Hudson Offered MJ Role AICN

The AICN web site is reporting the actress Kate Hudson has been offered the role of Mary Jane in the new Spider-Man movie. Hudson is the daughter of actress Goldie Hawn.

Chris Rock Wants To Be Spider-Man

Jam! Showbiz recently talked with comedian Chris Rock about his desire to play the webslinger. Here's a clip:

Rock, the 35-year-old, South Carolina-born, Brooklyn-raised, super-hot comic with the devilish grin, desperately and deliriously loves Spider Man and his alter ego, writer Peter Parker. Now Hollywood is making a Spider Man movie and Tobey Maguire has just been cast as the web-slinging superhero.

"I begged to be Spider Man," Rock offers as his riff begins. "I wanted an audition. But I couldn't get in, man. I couldn't get in. Just let me in the door ... (Rock pauses for effect).

"Tobey Maguire, he'll be fine. Small actually works on screen sometimes. He'll put on a suit and there will be muscles. But I would have been a GREAT Peter Parker, man. But I can NEVER be Peter Parker because I'm a black man."

John Malkovich Talks Confirmed! - UPDATED!Spider-Man Hype

Cinescape reports that the rumors about John Malkovich possibly taking on the role of arch-nemesis Norman Osborne (aka the Green Goblin) in Spider-Man are indeed true! The site placed a quick call to Malkovich's business managers and put the question to them.

"John is indeed in talks for the Spider-Man film," Malkovich's reps told us. Asked if his participation was confirmed yet, they answered: "We have no information at this time."

After Cinescape posted this info, an inside source, who told us several weeks before Tobey Maguire was cast that he was 'The Man', now also tells us Malkovich looks to be 'The Man'.

With Great Power, Comes Great ResponsibilitySpider-Man Crawlspace

Uncle Ben taught a young Peter Parker this very valuable lesson. Actor Brian Dennehy may utter this line to Tobey Maguire in the new Spider-Man movie. The Corona web site is reporting that Dennehy is rumored to be the front runner to play Uncle Ben Parker. Dennehy has appeared in "First Blood" and "F/X."

JJJ & Doc Ock Casting Rumors Spider-Man Hype.com

Apparently Sam may be eyeing William H. Macy for the role of J. Jonah Jameson. Although nothing is confirmed yet, here's the scoop: Our latest anonymous scooper writes in to tell us that director Sam Raimi's choice to play J. Jonah Jameson is none other than William H. Macy. The only stumbling block is Macy's schedule in filming Jurassic Park 3, which promises to get underway within 30 days.

Raimi supposedly wants Macy "REALLY bad", as anonymous puts it. "It's a 'love story' that comes back from Fargo (directed by the Coens, Raimi's pals)."

Another casting rumor our mysterious scooper talks about is the role of Dr. Octopus, and that he will be played by someone physically different from Cage: shorter, older, and not exactly in super-hero shape. There were talks about Bob Hoskins, but nothing is confirmed. Also, Brian Dennehy is one of the names being tossed around for the role of Uncle Ben. As for Ted Raimi, well, our hide-in-the-shadows friend informs us he'll be playing a one-armed scientist. OK, but which one-armed scientist?

Oh come on, you can't be so dumb that you have to ask that! How many one armed scientists does Peter know?

Wait, that's not all our friend had to tell us. We're also told that former Cirque Du Soleil ballerina, Italian Helena Buonfiglioli, was hired by an unnamed effects house to design the choreography for Spider-Man's aerial "dance" through the concerte canyons of NYC. Reportedly Buonfiglioli did some motion-capture test moves last Friday. Things sure sound promising as Spidey's web gets larger.

Spider-Man Crawlspace

Nick Cage is the front runner as the Green Goblin. Sony's Showbiz scoop e-mail even confirms that he is very interested and has been talking to Raimi and the producers about joining the production.

The Nick Cage rumor may come true, but it seems that the Julia Stiles one is falling through. Stiles was rumored to play Mary Jane Watson, but her publicist denies her involvement. Stiles is starting college and isn't taking on any more projects.

Ted Raimi To Appear In Spider-Man Spider-Man Hype

Ted Raimi, Joxer in the hit show Xena: Warrior Princess and Sam's younger brother, who often appears in his films, talked to the Xena website Whoosh. He mentioned that he has gotten a role in the Spider-Man movie his big brother Sam is directing later this year. No word who he will play.

Cage Close To Signing For The Green Goblin! Spider-Man Hype

According to Sony's weekly newsletter, Showbiz Scoop, Nicholas Cage is close to signing to star in Spider-Man alongside Tobey Maguire, as nemesis, the Green Goblin, whose bat-flying antics leave a trail of pumpkins behind him. This comes after word from Zap2it.com, who spoke with Cage's publicist about the Green Goblin rumor, that Cage was definitely interested in the part and was talking to Raimi and the producers about it. Can we expect an official announcement soon?

No Doc Ock For D'Onofrio Spider-Man Hype

TV Guide Online asked actor Vincent D'Onofrio (Men in Black) about the part of Doctor Octopus in the Spider-Man film, which prompted the actor to reply, "I wouldn't do it. There are certain things you cannot do." D'Onofrio also revealed a number of other prominent roles that he chose to pass on including Wolverine in the X-Men movie, Fred Flintstone in Viva Rock Vegas and the title role in The Rocketeer. Regarding word of Tobey Maguire taking the role of Spidey, the actor says, "I love Tobey Maguire. That's fantastic."

More On Schreiber As Conners Spider-Man Hype

Andrew Rogers from Zap2it tells us more on the Wizardworld.com rumor. He received a call from Liev Schreiber's agent at William Morris today who completely denied his involvement in Spider-Man. Apparently he hasn't been approached for the Dr. Conners part...and he hasn't read for it. So mark that rumor as "untrue."

August 4, 2000

No Cage, Stiles Or Schreiber? - UPDATED, as reported by Spider-Man Hype

Andrew Rogers at Zap2it.com has debunked the latest casting rumors, having contacted each of the agents for Nicolas Cage, Julia Stiles and Liev Schreiber. Is 4filmmakers wrong this time about Cage? Here's the scoop:

The current Internet buzz is that Nicolas Cage will be tapped to play the part of the Green Goblin. Cage’s fascination with comic books… and his attachment to the now defunct Superman remake, have been widely reported… so this casting rumor didn’t sound too nutty. When I called Cage’s agent at Creative Artists, however, he said there was absolutely no truth to the rumor that his client would be playing Spidey’s arch-nemesis. Also, a publicist at Columbia Pictures told me that Cage hadn’t even been in negotiations for the part.

UPDATE: After Rogers' story was posted, he spoke with Cage's publicist about the Green Goblin rumor. She said that Cage was definitely interested in the part and is talking to Raimi and the producers about it. She also said, though, that pronouncing Cage as the new Goblin at this point was very premature as negotiations haven't even started. Also, Cage won't finish his current picture, Wind Talkers until December... which, if he were cast, could potentially push back filming for Spider-Man.

Another popular rumor is that Julia Stiles would be playing Mary Jane, Peter Parker’s love interest, in the upcoming flick. But that was news to her publicist at IDPR who flatly denied Stiles involvement in the pic. Apparently Stiles hasn’t taken on any new projects lately because she’s starting college in the fall on the East Coast.

A story on Wizard Magazine’s Web site, wizardworld.com, suggests that "Liev Schreiber has reportedly signed on to play Dr. Curt Conners, the scientist who will one day become the Lizard (another enemy of Spidey’s)." A source at Schreiber’s agency, however said that Liev isn’t attached to any upcoming projects – but his schedule is wide-open and he could be available for a November shoot. So the jury is still out on this one.

Possible Flash Thompson Actor from Dark Horizons

The latest issue of Cinescape Magazine apparently has a chat with actor Vince Vaughn about his latest picture, The Cell. According to Dark Horizons, it`s rumored that when asked about his upcoming projects to which he replies that he has been approached to take on the role of Flash Thompson in the upcoming Spiderman movie.

The Good Guys

P>"Face it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot!"

Actress Julia Stiles may utter this famous line in the new Spider-Man movie. According to a scooper at the Spider-Man Hype site, Stiles is in negotiations to play Mary Jane Watson in the movie. Stiles has been seen in the movie The 10 Things I Hate About You and NBC's 60s mini-series. According to the site, she is asking for a low-seven figure salary with an option for two sequels. This, like the Nick Cage article, are just rumors at this point.

My only bad feeling about having Mary Jane Watson in the movie is that Gwen Stacey came before MJ in the comic books. It would be an incredible scene to see the Green Goblin causing Gwen's death, a fall from the bridge with a snapped neck before Spidey can save the first love of his life. I haven't seen either of those two movies, but I think appearance-wise, if she goes with a darker shade of red hair, Julia could right on the money! She is a pretty girl.

As of July 31, 2000, actor Tobey Maquire was officially announced as the man to wear the webs!

In the beginning, I thought Freddy Prinze, Jr. seemed the most solid choice. I hadn't given much thought about Tobey. He didn't seem to be among the group of actors (James Franco, Scott Speedman and Jay Rodan) being seriously mentioned. But I think that Tobey's going to be a good and believable Peter/Spidey. He's got the right look, is close enough in the right age range and may have the most favorable trait for this role: he's one of the newest soon-to-be mega young stars that Hollywood has right now. Tobey's got the right look, is close enough in the right age range. And, on a personal note, I've only seen Pleasantville out of all his movies but given the range of roles he's had lately, he strikes me as a true actor, not just a little bit of eye candy.

Gloria Stuart, from Titanic could be the best, if not the only, choice for Peter's beloved Aunt May. Do her white hair into a bun and you've got the old gal!

However, Aunt May needs an equally loveable and kindly Uncle Ben. Eddie Jones, Jonathan Kent from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, would be a better choice. As an actor, Eddie Jones fits the part best: he can portray a kind father-figure or he can play a gun-toting thug, like in the Robert Redford movie, Sneakers. He's got some really good versatility. Besides, you don't want to waste a huge name in this part: Uncle Ben should be offed early in the film anyway.

The Bad Guys

Right now, the two main villians mentioned for the movie are Doc Ock, who is being referred to Dr. Octavious (sorry if that's spelled wrong) and the Green Goblin. Both happen to be my two choices as well for the movie.

Doc Ock is a character who's "Spider-verse" history, according to the Fox Spider-man animated series, brings him in direct contact with a young Peter Parker. In their version, Doc Ock was a science professor that took young Peter under his wing when he realized the other kids were giving him a hard time. I have to admit, however, that my knowledge of the good doctor's Marvel Comics history isn't as accurate. I like Fox's version, because it would make Spider-man's battles with Doc Ock more personal.

I would like to see John Lithgow as Doc Ock. He's already shown that he can play a psychopath in Rasing Cain as easily as he can play an alien on Third Rock from the Sun, so he's got the versatility.

How about the Green Goblin? This one was a hard one for me to decide. I was thinking Charles Sheen originally, but I did like the rumors of Liam Neesom taking over the glider and pumpkin bombs. But on July 31, 2000, new rumors about Gobby came up.

I do like Nicholas Cage quite a bit so I can see this one happening. Let's hope this rumor is true!
