The Battle For Guadalcanal
Shortly after defeating the Japanese at the battle of Midway, the United States decided to push into the strategically important area of the southwest Pacific, Guadalcanal. On August 8th, 1942, 11,000 marines landed on Guadalcanal after lenghty naval and air attacks. The Japanese resisted fiercely and it took America 5 months to take over Guadalcanal. In the end 1,769 Americans and over 25,600 Japanese were killed.
