Background: CASE FILE: Project 657. Objective:
To infuse the normal, everyday human being with abilities not usually
found in the normal, everyday human. In Khazan, the chances of a person
gaining special abilities goes up remarkably, though the chance is still
rather low. With this project, we intend to raise the chances drastically
by making the super-powers you find in comic books available to the
general public on a commercial basis. We do NOT want to give the local
government, and perhaps organizations like DollarCorp, the SLJ, and others
with a cheap means of obtaining super-soldiers. We will handle all
negotiations, and sell our product privately, despite public
advertisement. More details can be found in any file under #657, as well
as #185-0042 (DNA Samples from Resident Superheroes and Supervillains).
CASE FILE: Subject 657-45C-01. Name: Patrick Dunaway. Mr. Dunaway appears
to be a typical Phys Ed. teacher. Low-paying job, resulting in emotional
problems and slight depression usually associated with a large family and
said low-paying job. Since the fifth version of Mix 37 (our try at
telekinesis) resulted in a marked regression of adult mentality and
eventual death from what we call ‘lazy brain syndrome’ (one of the saddest
brain deficiencies we’ve ever encountered; victim dies very gradually as
brain functions slow until life can no longer be supported), we instead
decided to give him our newest attempt at Mix 45, which is supposed to
increase mental speed, reflex time, synapse-filtering rate, and other such
qualities. Standard anesthetic was administered, and he was brought in for
treatment. It was a success. At least that’s what we assumed, because when
we checked on him in Recovery Sector 18, he was gone. Just missing. We
assume Mix 45C worked in more ways than expected, as he appears to have
run straight through one of the guards. Left an awful mess, that did.
What’s worse is that he was never tagged, in case something like this
happened. Not only have we lost a perfectly competent guard, but we’ve
lost a test subject. Efforts are currently underway to track down Dunaway,
sedate him, and bring him back for examination...
Character Personality Needed money that’s all just needed money to pay off
the insurance and the heating bills and the bar tab my wife had building
up life was getting rough life was starting to suck my kids hated me my
wife was a drunk but what could I do I needed to help them I needed them
to love me again wanted them to stop wanting me to go away all the time
had to make some money to make life easier so I looked and looked and
looked but I didn’t find anything that was worth the time then I saw this
ad that said ‘test subjects needed for DNA research’ and I went and asked
and they offered me a lotta money that was my chance and I took it by God
I took it and it was the worst decision of my life I signed the waivers
and they injected me with something that knocked me cold and when I woke
up I couldn’t stop myself I just kept thinking and thinking and thinking
it was going so damn fast and everything around me was going so damn slow
what did they do to me why can’t I stop thinking why do I always have to
move on an eternal caffeine high this sucks life sucks I wanna stop moving
but I can’t stop my body won’t let me my mind won’t let me stop I just
have to keep moving and moving and moving why does my life has to be this
way why did everything go wrong like this why can’t I go back to my
low-paying job at the academy and live my life like it was I can’t have a
normal life anymore I can’t stop can’t stop won’t stop hurts too much to
stop can’t stop...

CASE FILE:
657-45C-01-11 (Transcript of Interview between Dr. Bernard T. Scaling and
Khazan Police Department Sgt. Del Corzucan, Precinct 21). S: ‘Good
morning, Sgt. Corzucan. I am Dr. B.T. Scaling, and I will be conducting
today’s interview.’ C: ‘Mornin’, sir.’ S: ‘Would you like something to
drink before we begin? Coffee, water?’ [three-second interval] C: ‘Nah.’
S: ‘Good, then shall we begin?’ C: ‘Fine.’ S: ‘Alright. I’ll start by
asking where you were when you saw this car accident.’ C: ‘The Grand Ole
Coffee Shop, right near the corner of Florence Drive and Redding Drive.’
[let records show that this is Florence Drive of Uptown, not Florence
Boulevard of the Industrial Sector] S: ‘And this is where you allegedly
saw Mr. Dunaway cause the aforementioned car accident?’ C: ‘Yeah, he
matched up with the photo shown to me.’ S: ‘Tell me how that happened.’
[seven-second interval] C: ‘I was walking out of the coffee shop with my
partner, when this guy just popped up in the middle of the intersection.
Bam. He was just [three-second interval] there, you know? It was like he
had teleported there, but I knew he had moved there ‘cause I remember
seeing a motion blur come from down Redding Drive. It was like the ones
you usually see with speedsters that tear up the roads. He stayed in that
spot for two seconds. One second he stopped on a dime, the other second he
screamed, and then he just tore off again.’ S: ‘And what caused the
accident?’ C: ‘He popped up in the middle of a green light, when some
drivers were going through just below the speed limit. And he stopped
right in the middle of one of the lanes. One of the drivers tried to avoid
him, and he fishtailed right into the traffic waiting for the red light to
switch to green.’ [four-second interval] S: ‘And was there anything
remarkable about this accident?’ [two-second interval] C: ‘Yeah. One of
the cars had a footprint smashed into the hood, and another into the top.’
[three-second interval] ‘ He had to’ve been thinking pretty fast to get
over that car without falling off or tripping.’ [end transcript; Sgt.
Corzucan continues the interview with details on how he and his partner
(Officer Felicia Dumont) pulled the survivors of the crashes out of their
vehicles before one of the vehicles exploded due to a gas leak; injuries
caused by the explosion included second-degree burns to both Officer
Dumont and Sgt. Corzucan; no casualties were reported]

CASE FILE: 657-45C-01-06
(Escape of Test Subject 01; Patrick Dunaway). Speed is a dangerous force.
Simon Garrens learned this the hard way; he was the one guard killed by
Dunaway. He died of many, many complications, as his torso was ventrally
split in half and ripped away from his head and arms. He was effectively
torn into five large pieces, and many, many smaller ones. Whether it had
been done incidentally or not, it was a quick and destructive death that
Simon most likely never saw coming, as the autopsy of his lower torso
indicated his spine had been crushed inward, with some vertebrae split
vertically. With Mix 45, we merely intended to increase mental speed.
There was some speculation that it might actually increase physical speed
along with the pre-mentioned intentions. Naturally, we had thought of this
in bloody ADVANCE, meaning we had the incentive to give him slightly more
durable shoes. (And, as Fate dictates, the shoes that were supposed to be
placed in his room were replaced with shoes we had received by accident,
which in turn were supposed to be handed out to the staff as to avoid ever
needing to buy shoes again) These shoes replaced the ones he had, and were
placed in his recovery room along with the rest of his clothes. It’s
suspected that he had a chance to put on all of his clothes before his
escape, as the alarm that alerted of his awakening rang some two minutes
before Garrens was said to have ‘exploded’. His head and left arm were
just recently extricated from the walls of Recovery Sector 18. Dunaway had
to’ve been running terribly fast to imbed flying body parts into a
concrete wall...

CASE FILE: 657-45C-01-06
(Escape of Test Subject 01; Patrick Dunaway, cont’d) The Recovery Area is
literally a labyrinth. It was constructed with the purpose of making
people who hadn’t memorized the layout get lost, specifically, escaping
test subjects. It’s got twists, it’s got turns, it’s got all the elements
of a maze, with several recovery rooms in between. How Dunaway managed to
escape at the speeds we think he was running is beyond me, as it is with
several of my colleagues. The footprints that he left scorched in the
floors shows that he was going at damn fast speeds, and how he
accommodated for the many corridors of Recovery Sector 18 without
splattering himself on a wall we don’t know. We guess that Mix 45C
actually worked like we wanted it too, and accelerated his reflex time and
mental speed by some very large exponent. Truthfully, it isn’t a real
surprise. With Mix 45B, test subjects did indeed gain accelerated reaction
times. When tested in environments such as a low-grav chamber, desert
areas, and swamped regions, test subjects 657-45B-02 through 657-45B-08
were able to deduce ways to run at normal speeds without tripping up. It’s
just that Mix 45B provided us with worthlessly temporary results. With
Dunaway, we expect very much the same results as provided from the terrain
tests performed on nearly all the 45B subjects. We doubt there won’t be a
terrain he won’t be able to navigate when he’s got reflexes as fast as
those we assume he has now.
