[ABOUT THE BAND]

CORBY

Frustration. Anger. Violence. Unemployment. Poverty. Cheap lager. Strong inhalants. These are a few of Corby’s favourite things. Once a proud steel town in Northamptonshire populated largely by Glaswegians who moved south to find work, the turn for the worse in Corby came 20 years ago when the steel industry collapsed and left most of the town with nothing to do and nowhere to go. Fast forward to today and walk straight into the realm of those who grew up in this environment, and you’ll meet the six members of Raging Speedhorn.

Earlier in this century a lot of Glaswegian workers were relocated in corby to work in the steel works. This idea later fell through and that leaves a lot of Scottish people living in corby. The situation that Raging Speedhorn were in was very similair to that of the almighty Slipknot, before they started their band in Des moines Iowa. Both Raging Speedhorn and Slipknot were fed up of living in a place where there is nothing to do and they both formed bands. On the outskirts of Corby there is a lot of grassy areas and trees...this however changes when you enter the town.In the centre there are a lot of boarded-up old shops, broken bus-shelters and litter.Corby isn't as bad as it may seem, but the council don't seem to do all that much to 'brighten' it up.This place however wouldn't be the best place to walk around in at night. And yes, there doesen't seem like all that much to do here. -chris Wyley

THE BAND AND THE MUSIC

A band with two lead vocalists is rare within the context of Metal, but Frank Regan and John Loughlin augment their aggressive attacks with rapid-fire tradeoffs most often found in rap groups. Along with guitarists Gareth Smith and Tony Loughlin, bassist Darren Smith and drummer Gordon Morison, Raging Speedhorn have stockpiled more than twenty songs in just over a year together. Though based around a full-frontal assault from all musical directions, the songs are further strengthened by a willingness to let riffs breathe and chords hang.

So what prompted 6 lads from Corby to create what is known as Raging Speedhorn? ‘We formed to get off our arses and do something. It was what we wanted to do. It was that or work in a factory’ shrugs singer John Loughlin. The band have managed to rack up an amazing 70 shows in 7 months and that figure is growing still. They have had the pleasure of supporting such bands as Ministry, Iron Monkey, A.C. and Consolidated amongst others. In November 1999 the band undertook a 21 day Kerrang! Magazine sponsored tour with earthtone9. This was immediately followed by a shorter tour with Will Haven.Live, the singers John and Frank Regan’s rapid fire lyrics backed by guitarists Tony Loughlin and Gareth Smith, bassist Darren Smith and drummer Gordon Morrison proves an invigorating experience, something which has been fine tuned as a result of their constant touring. Two singers is something that rock bands usually lack. So how did that come about? ‘The 6 of us got together, we thought; 2 guitarists, drummer, bassist and…2 singers…why not, you know, it’s not been done in rock before and it seems to have worked so far!’ As we all know, the L.A. music scene is huge, do they guys think that English bands could up the status of their music and possibly become just as good as the L.A.. music? ‘I don’t see why not. There are a lot of great English bands around now, Magazines like Kerrang! And Metal Hammer are starting to realise there is more out there than Slipknot and Korn. Hopefully they’ll help to bring the ‘underground’ scene into the mainstream’ says Tony. ‘The amount to radio coverage rock music gets is appalling though. Why should fans have to wait until midnight to hear the music they like?’ – indeed. The band’s debut LP is was released on Green Island Records in July 2000. -Taken in part from interview with Tony and John Loughlin at Leeds Duchess 27 April 2000
