"And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.   It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there."    Isaiah 13:19-20
"Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her."
Revelation 18:8
Many people believe because the actual city of Babylon is no longer that prophecies concerning her have been fulfilled and this is untrue!!!!   Most of the prophecies concerning Babylon remain unfulfilled, especially the prophecies that proclaim that her bricks will not be used to rebuild other cities and her destruction like Sodom and Gomorrah.
The ancient city stood on both sides of the Euphrates River in what is now known as Iraq, nearby is a modern city called Hillah and it was built largely from stones from the ancient city, as were at least 6 other cities, including the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.   Arabian's still pitch their tents nearby and shepherds still tend to their flocks, and let's not forget most of the ruins of the ancient city show that Babylon did not suffer the fate the Bible declares will befall it.
What a lot of everyday Christian's don't realize is that Sadam Hussein has spent over a billion dollars restoring the ancient city including the famous Ishtar Gate, the palace of Nebuchadnezzar and three pagan temples.   According to Are We Living in the End Times? By Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins in June of 1990 Prime Time Live visited the rebuilt city, let's see what Diane Sawyer said upon her visit.
"
Now, Saddam Hussein dreams of rebuilding the granduer, reclaiming the vision.   This is Babylon, twenty five hundred years ago, the dazzling center of a rich civilization.   There were the hanging gardens, the palaces, all built by a man who managed to unite the country and rule with an iron hand.   In fact, right over here there are bricks that bear an ancient stamp.   It says, "I am King Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, king of everything from sea to far sea."   But there are new bricks too, imprinted with a different stamp.   This one says [the camera pointing at a brick with Arabic inscriptions], "I am Saddam Hussein, president of the Republic of Iraq."
Next to Jerusalem, Babylon is the most spoke of city in the Bible.    It had a far greater impact on the world than most people realize.    This is the land that gave birth to false religion and socialism among many things, it's policies and philosophies spread throughout the ancient world like invisible tentacles that still touch the world today.    Aptly put, it was Satan's capital city.    It's most famous king, Nebuchanezzar is a clear example of man's arrogance and pride, man's willingness to worship self and idols, man's cruelty and man's greed.  And this notorious city will serve as God's ultimate example of righteous vengeance.
Prophetical scholars agree that in order to fulfill all the scriptures concerning Babylon, she must be rebuilt.   And as we've seen, Saddam Hussein has already begun doing just that, it is only a matter of time before she rises from the ashes, and is restored to her former glory, she will be the capital of the one world government, the heart of commerce and trading.
Tim LaHaye said it best, "
God woos us through His word and His Spirit to walk by faith; Satan woos us through government, commerce, and religious idolatry to walk by site."
Let's take a look at a couple more scriptures concerning the destruction of Babylon that was not fulfilled in the past.
"
Her cities are a desolation, a dry land and a wilderness, a land where no one dwells, through which no son of man passes." Jeremiah 51:43

"
The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her, when they see the smoke of her burning, standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come."

The Bible makes it clear that Babylon will be destroyed in much the same manner of Sodom and Gomorrah and their sister cities and suffer the same fate of desolation and destruction.    Exactly how were those ancient cities destroyed and could it possibly happen to Babylon?   Let's have a look and see.
The sister cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim and Zoar were located near the Dead Sea, an area abundant in deposits of asphalt, petroleum, and natural gas, not to mention tar pits, salt formations and the unmistakable smell of sulphur, all it would take to wipe out four out of the five cities is an earthquake and an electrical storm.
So, what if anything does does Babylon have in common with these cities?   More than you  would think!!!    The entire city of Babylon was built over large supplies of bitumonous asphalt and pitch, and asphalt can be found running just ten feet below the surface of the earth.    A volcanic erruption is all it would take to fulfill every prophecy leveled against the ancient city.
Saddam Hussein has begun rebuilding the city, and it is only a matter of time before someone finsishes what he started, she will rise again, perhaps in our lifetime, and she most assuredly will fall again never to be inhabited again!
