THE
DREAM

| Somewhere
between the twilight fringes of sleep and the depth of total surrender
to the night she dreams.
Vivid imagery emerges in the darkened hues of night. She finds herself in her favorite place; seated on a log washed to shore by the rages of a winter storm. The vast expanse of the ocean spreads itself before her but is obscured by a light fog. It is a serene night, the ocean waters calm yet somehow forbidding. She hears a shrill cry and the flap of wings overhead. With its power the eagle displaces the fog and lands on a rock just off shore. The stars and moon send their brilliance down to shine on the majestic bird as it sits calmly gazing at her. "I have come to carry your words. Take them across the great expanse of land. Let them be heard by those you wish to share them with." |

| She
closes her eyes and entrusts her thoughts to the eagles. "Be off
with the light of the morning sun. Fly high with the thermals of
the Universe supporting you, your mighty wings carrying you on your journey.
Be safe."
As the eagle spreads its wings and lifts off into the dawn of the day she hears a different screeching, the raven. It circles and dives at the wings of the eagle. Its calls bring more of its black feathered friends. They taunt and torment from above and below. She watches as the eagle takes refuge in the nearest tree. |

| On
the breath of the morning air the words come to her.
"I can not complete my task, you must seek another way." A sound of a different nature drifts to her ears. A familiar sound but one not heard in a long time. Then a mournful cry as a raven plummets from the sky, its wings no longer able to keep it aloft. The others frantically swoop and dive, their sounds echoing off the land. She looks up to the roadway and sees the cause. A man with no face, just the eyes of evil, piercing her, looking into the depths of her soul. Then she hears the laughter, the sound, a voice from the past, it causes her knees to buckle and she sinks into the cool dampened sand. As she comes to rest on the sands of the shore she cries out "Fly my friend, be swift for he means you harm." The ravens disburse their sounds ring sorrowful in the calmness of the dawn. She sees the eagle spread its wings, and prays it will take flight in time. As it rises from the branch once again she hears the sound, but the cry of the falling eagle is drowned by her screams. She wakes to her own cries. Body trembling, she wraps her arms around herself as the tears kiss her cheeks. A ghost from the past has come to invade her. An apparition long buried but come back to life. His laughter rings in her ears as she faces the rising shades of daylight. She walks to the beach and finds the place of her dream. She speaks aloud to the ghost of her past. "I am not the woman you knew. I have become and will forever more be unbreakable. I have the determination to survive and will not allow you to break me once again. Be gone from me. I banish you from my soul, from my dreams, from my life. As she turns to walk away an eagle soars overhead then lands on the same branch as in her dream. She looks up at her feathered friend. "Your words have been heard." Before she can ask which words the eagle has flown from its perch to the rainbow of dreams. |
