Wives of Daniel Tudor

Big thanks to Gerald Tudor, Steve Lawson, and Carl Mobley for participating in email round robin and permitting me to post their comments. The purpose of this page is to present a confusing issue and to encourage further discussion and research. I have not provided any contact information, but everyone has a significant presence in applicable online genealogical circles.

Gerald Tudor's Research

Gerald Tudor appears to have performed the most research regarding the wives of Daniel Tudor. The following was provided by Gerald:

"Here are the confusing facts about Daniel Tudor and his alleged marriage to a Nancy Moberly. I believe that the data and periods of time as to Nancy Moberly's 1st marriage and the death of her first husband, presents a problem for a second marriage to Daniel Tudor (of Madison Co., KY) as the Nancy and Daniel are listed in the 1850 census for Madison Co., before the death of the other Nancy's husband.

"There is some question as to the birthdates of Daniel's children. A large gap exists between the supposed dates of 1795, when married, and 1801 as well as from 1801 to 1811; were there other children whose lives were cut short? Nancy may very well be the name of his wife and the mother of all of his children as is portrayed in most accounts of descendants. There are a few marriages to Daniel Tudors in the early years. The first is Mimey Moberly, bond date 10Nov. 1795, which may be Nancy Jemima, but this recorder has doubts.

"There is a Marjorie McKinsey to a Daniel Tudor, bond date 11 Oct. 1815, and a Nancy Ross to a Daniel Tudor, bond date31 Dec. 1817. Could this Daniel have been married more than once? And, are his children by more than one wife?

"Vital Statistics reports Daniel's death at age 81, of a fever, on 19 June 1855, but also reports birth as being in Granger Co., NC. Granville Co. is correct. This compiler will suggest that Daniel Tudor, son of John and Elizabeth of Granville Co., NC, did marry three times and that his first wife was Mimey Moberly, mother of his first five children, Tabitha, Samuel, Blumer, Jemima and Winnefred Ann; that he married next, Margery McKinsey, the mother of John (named after her father John McKinzie?); next and last wife to be Nancy Ross, mother of the rest of his children, the first being Lydia, named after Nancy's mother, Lydia, wife of George Ross. Now, a major qualifier must accompany such a statement: There is a Nancy Ross who married Samuel Tudor in Feb. 1813 and this Nancy's mother was a Liddy (Lydia) Ross. This Nancy was apparently deceased before 1818 as Samuel remarried a Pinkston. Or, was this the correct Samuel Tudor? A Samuel tudor, son of John and Martha Searcy Tudor did have a family and is enumerated in the census records of Madison Co. and distinguished from the other Samuels. Sorry, but some of the above made sense as there was only one Daniel Tudor who could have married the three ladies named above, and that Daniel is the subject of this report. The other Daniel, of age, Daniel Baldwin Tudor, son of John and Martha Searcy Tudor, had only the one wife, Rhoda Sallee, mother of all his children as appears through the census records to 1870.

"Census Data for Daniel Tudor:

"It is obvious that Daniel is about age 75 or 76 in 1850 if the previous census records are correct and based upon his reported age at death five years after the 1850 census (81). As to Nancy, she too should be older than 52 years as the 1840 census reports her from 50 to 60 years of age. If the Mimey is the same Nancy reported by most descendants, then the birth date is between 1780 and 1784, when married. This assumes that Daniel had the same wife throughout, but the estimated birth dates would make her from age 11 to 15?"

Gerald also provided excerpts and analysis of Madison County, Kentucky abstracts referencing Moberly family members and a compilation of early Madison County Moberly marriages.

Other Researchers' Comments

Carl Mobley and Steve Lawson have also contributed significantly to Moberly (Mobley or Mobberly) research.

Carl responded to Gerald's comments as follows:

"[L]ooking at Nancy's group sheet I would doubt she married a second time. These dates (if accurate or even close) indicate she outlived William by a shade over 5 years and was quite elderly at his death. I do see in Benjamin's group sheet she is shown as having married 2d Daniel Tudor but it does not show in her FGS.

Steve responded to Gerald's comments as follows:

"My information on Nancy Mobley is limited to 'Nancy married Wilson ADDISON and/or Daniel TUDOR.' I am appending the entire FGS for the family of Benjamin MOBERLY, father of Nancy. This is from MOBLEYS IN AMERICA, which is now maintained by Carl Mobley. The 'header' information indicates the basic information is from a History written by a nephew-in-law of Nancy. While I have no way of evaluating the accuarcy of the info, that's a pretty close relationship and *may* indicate first person knowledge. I haven't personally looked for information on this Moberly branch.
